In swedish it is ''kvart över 4 (fyra)'' which sounds pretty much the same in dutch. The ''kvart/kwart/ -thing stands for quarter = 15 minutes. (4 quarters in an hour).

@DJKernen In writing we'll usually use the 24h system, in speech it's either implied or people say " 's morgens / 's middags / 's avonds / 's nachts ". The 's is an abbreviation of "des" which is a remainder of the case system dutch used to have.. it just means "in the" :)

@SeIias after 10.15 we start talking about the half hour.. so 10:18 = 12 voor half 11 :) if someone was reading it from a digital clock, though, they might say "10 uur 18" or "18 over 10" :)

Yes there're diffirences. There aren't much specific rules for this. This is one of the hardest things about the Dutch language. There is a rule of thumb though: if it's neuter noun it's USEUALLY 'het' and for male or female nouns we use 'de'. By the way these rules do ALWAYS apply: if it's a so called verkleinwoord (diminutive) like 'little car' (=autootje) you say 'het', while a normal car gets 'de'. (=de auto). Oh, and plurals ALWAYS get 'de', so it's 'de auto's' and 'de autootjes'.

@rbvmtr Translations are correct, but if you use digits for expressing your time, use : instead of ; to separate hours from the minutes, so 22:15, 11:55, and so on.

@2tz02 Not "achtenveertig over twee" for 14:48 or 2:48 but after 14:30 you use "voor" instead of "over". So, you must say "Het is 12 voor 2", 60 - 48 = 12, therefore *twaalf* voor twee.

Haha I think you mean elf over half dree for 14:41 :) My favorite pronunciation from the list was vijf over half elf - sounds so funny when I say it. Also I must say that counting down the minutes to half past every hour, not just every hour, seemed really strange to me but so typically Dutch x

You have to learn de- words and het- words by heart. There are actually no rules. There's only one exception; if it's a ''small'' word (with tje, pje and kje behind the word), you always use 'het'. (NOT in plural)

Good question... we say that only when we know the time roughly(around which hour)... but saying the hour too, is perfect too. So it is absolutely correct, to say "vijf voor half twaalf", for example. Succes(good luck)!
