Honestly, I've learnt this by pretty much listening to native speakers It's kinda hard to explain from a grammar standpoint nevertheless you nailed it but since you touched on a grammar-related subject let me ask you about the use of "ing" after to. How do I know when to add it to the verb or when to leave it in its infinitive form? as in Mother Teresa devoted her life to HELPING/HELP the poor. I wanna say it's "helping" but thats very intuitive-laden not because I know it for sure. tHANKS....
@albiss11645 жыл бұрын
Here are three situations where a gerund must be used after the preposition 'to': 1) If 'to' is part of a phrasal verb or verb + preposition combination: I look forward to meeting your parents tonight! / He confessed to killing his next-door neighbour. 2) If 'to' is part of an adjective + preposition combination: I am addicted to watching soap operas on TV! / She is committed to improving the education system. 3) If 'to' is part of a noun + preposition combination: His addiction to gambling has caused a lot of stress for his family./ Her great dedication to teaching inspires her students. So, according to rule #1, the correct way to write the sentence in your comment would be: Mother Teresa devoted her life to HELPING the poor. 😃

Hi Alex, hi everyone. I belong to French speaking country, Guinea. My English is not so good. I learnt English from youtube videos, particularly from EngVid. So excuse me if my question is bad. I want to know the difference between "to+verb" and "for+verb+ing" ? I mean, for example : 1- I go to the gym to stay healthy 2- I go to the gym for staying healthy. Is the second one correct or not ? Thank you.
