Yes Jim very helpful. So many movable chord options including just using you index finger as a barr each fret but I like options. Some chords sound better using one shape and a different chord better using another shape. Speed of course is the challenge. Takes time to switch out of one chord to another in rhythm. One reason why using the same shape up and down the neck is your friend.

So basically what I asked was that how did you know that Earl Scruggs, Sonny Osborne, Jd Crowe ect... How did you know that they did not learn by tab? I think it is easier to learn without tab 90% of the time, but I was just wondering how you knew.

Do your own research sometime, the answers are out there. For most of the early musicians, the music was something passed on through person to person just by playing and learning with each other. When people had new ideas they created it themselves. Listen and learn and try not to read too much ;)
@JimPankey
@JimPankey 2 жыл бұрын
@@Isaiah_46_4-5 If they learned from tabs, where are the tabs? What books? Those documents would be available if they existed. Furthermore, all of those players have stated at different times that they did not use tabs to learn. ...and banjo tabs just simply didn't exist until after Scruggs was already famous.

Hi Jim, thanks for the video. On a separate note (no pun intended...) regarding your J D Crowe thumb pick, I believe that is the shorter Bluechip version, and could you let me know how much shorter that version is from the usual length of thumb picks please ? Cheers, Steve.

I’m tearing my hair out trying to play the F shape with out muting the 3rd trying with my ring finger or muting the second string by not pressing down hard enough with my index finger. It feels like my fingers are simultaneously too large and too small😭

Thanks for another great one, Jim. For me, the F-minor shape will take some growing into, but thanks to your encouragement, I know I'll get it. Just had a reckoning moment with learning your Sailor song- spent ½ hour or better trying to make A#(Bb) sound like a D- kept listening and looking at your fingers and scratching my head until it hit me my brain was trying the D shape from down the neck when it should have been the down the neck F shape- making the D chord at this spot- duh! Thought I'll never do that again... until I got to the B part of the song. But I caught that one in just a minute or two! No matter how old you get- math still bites you every now and then!

@@JimPankey Just threw it out there for any who may not realize it. It seems to be almost common knowledge for guitarists but not everyone has ventured there. Hope your doing even better than the last time I commented about a month ago. Older, has it's perks and downfalls but older banjos in decent shape are incredible, ha, ha.
