Learn Finnish by listening! Untranslatable words

Moi! Mä tein jo monta vuotta sitten videon, jossa mä selitin, mitä tarkottaa sana “niin”. Tää on sellanen sana, jota käytetään tosi usein mutta jota on vaikee joskus kääntää muille kielille. Suomen kielessä on myös muita tällasia vaikeesti käännettäviä sanoja, joita mä käytän tosi usein, ja joita oikeesti käytetään todella usein jokapäiväisessä elämässä, joten tänään mä haluaisin selittää teille että mitä ne tarkottaa ja miks mä en aina käännä niitä englanninkielisissä tekstityksissä.
Ensimmäisenä sana “eli”. Mä oon huomannu että mä alotan tosi usein lauseen tällä sanalla, ja sen voi hyvin kääntää englanniks “so” tai ranskaks “donc”. Eli se viittaa siihen et mä selitän jotain aikasemmin sanottua, tai jatkan siitä samasta aiheesta. Tällä tavalla se voidaan korvata sanalla “joten”. “Eliä” voidaan käyttää myös lauseen loppupäässä, jos mä haluun selittää jonkun asian toisin sanoin eli eri tavalla.
Jotku teistä saattaa myös huomata, että “eli” on verbin “elää” yksikön kolmas persoonamuoto imperfektissä, mutta näillä kahella ei oo mitään tekemistä keskenään.
Sit toinen sana on “siis”. Tää on sellanen täytesana, jota mä käytän ihan huomaamattani. Se voitais kääntää englanniks “so” tai “like”, tai ranskaks ehkä “en fait”. Sillä voi kans alottaa lauseen mutta se ei oikeestaan tarkota mitään. “Siis et ikinä usko mitä eilen tapahtui.” Sitä voidaan käyttää myös niinku “eli” eli viittaamaan johonkin aiemmin mainittuun tai tunnettuun asiaan. “Mä olin siis oikeessa.” Se voi myös kuvata syytä ja seurausta, esimerkiks: “Mä nukuin pommiin ja siis myöhästyin töistä”, tai tarkennusta: “Kaikki Pohjoismaat, siis myös Suomi”.
Sit vähän erilainen sana: “ite”. Tää tulee kirjakielen sanasta “itse” ja tarkottaa “oneself”. Eli “mä ite” on “myself”, “sä ite” on “yourself”. Ranskaks käytetään tällasta muotoa ku alotetaan “Moi, je” ja niin edelleen, ja italiaks ku ylipäätään sanotaan “io”, koska yleensä pelkkä verbi riittää.
Eli tän tarkotus on painottaa että sä puhut susta ittestäs. Tää on tosi yleinen puhekielessä ja taaskaan mä en ees huomaa ku mä käytän sitä. Se vaan kuuluu tavalliseen suomen puhekieleen.
Eli mä halusin vaan nopeesti selittää näiden sanojen tarkotuksen, mutta mä en suosittele että te opettelette ulkoa nää kaikki selitykset tai kun te puhutte suomea että te miettisitte millon näitä voi käyttää. Olikohan tää nyt viittaus aiemmin mainittuun ja sopiikohan tähän nyt tää sana. Ei, niinku mä aina sanon, tän oppimismetodin tarkotus on harjottaa teidän kielikorvaa kuulemaan, mikä on hyvää, tavallista suomen kieltä. Eli kuunnelkaa paljon ja pikkuhiljaa te alatte automaattisesti tajuamaan, miten käyttää näitä sanoja teidän omassa puheessa.

Thank you for this very interesting video that is very important for understanding the spoken language! I find filler words very important in a language they are a kind of glue that holds the language together, it is often decisive how you use them - in my opinion there are many more of them and their use can significantly improve or worsen the statement. I wanted to note that in the past I often translated the word "eli" with "for example" ("zum Beispiel", "beispielsweise" or d.h. (das heißt) = "this means") into German, I actually had the impression that it often fits well.

Agreed! I think the meaning is slightly different from 'for example', but it depends on the situation of course :)

I watched this new Finnish series called "mädät omenat" and when the patient first arrives at the mental hospital, the first phrase the nurse says is "no niin".😂 Which they translated into English as "alright then".

I am 2 years overdue with my response, but would you be able to copy the finnish subtitles to the language Finnish? I don't really need the English part (and actually it is easier with only Finnish). My language tool only imports if the language name is Finnish. Of course if separating Finnish and English is a lot of work, then just a copy of the current English would be fine. I always mistranslate eli as 'or' because of its similarity to russian или and scandinavian eller

In many dialects "eli" can also mean "or" but the word "tai" (="or") is much more common nowadays.

Indeed, eli is very often heard. Another one I heard people using almost in every sentence or even more than once in a sentence was “totta”. Does that just fill the void between words or has its own meaning as a filler word? Like, are there instances when you cannot use totta between words? What is this?

I think you mean "tota" - this is one of the many occasions where that one letter makes a huge difference (totta means true). I will make a video where I explain this!
