I remember when I saw this video for the first time, it was like 2 years ago, and I fell in love with the language! Finnish is so beautiful! I love it, Finland we salute you// Spain!!
@randelaoveer23959 жыл бұрын
For me an Estonian the numbers were the easiest thing about learning Finnish because they're so similar (note that Y and Ü are pronounced the same). For example: Estonian= üks. Finnish=yksi. kaks. kaksi kolm. kolme. neli. neljä. viis. viisi. kuus. kuusi. seitse. seitsemän. kaheksa. kaheksan. üheksa. yheksan. kümme. kymmenen.
@IlotikkuFiN8 жыл бұрын
+Mikael Gralukavich They're often said "yheksän" and "kaheksan" in spoken language, so technically he was correct. It's also common to drop "i" letters from "yksi" and "kaksi", so they become "yks" and "kaks".
@medeiapsyche6 жыл бұрын
Yeahhhhhh Finnish and Estonian have a lot of similarities
@hetasii10 жыл бұрын
Actually, in speaking finnish the numbers are... Yks kaks kolme nelja Viis kuus seitteman kaheksan yheksan kymmenen Or... Yy kaa koo Nee vii kuu see kasi ysi kymppi (Use those only when youre counting like, hide and seek with kids)

Yhdeksän (9) and kahdeksan (8) are derived from yksi (1) and kaksi (2), because 10-1 = 9 and 10-2 = 8.
@pappapappi91772 жыл бұрын
I thought the same.. but given 10 is kymmenen, which has nothing to do with '..eksan' nor with '..eksan' so it remains a bit far fetched.
@andrewstephen90962 жыл бұрын
@@pappapappi9177 No, it's not far-fetched at all..... It's fact...... The part that means 'ten' is actually '-deksan', like the Greek 'deka', or Iranian 'dah', meaning the number 10.. The Indo-European languages had a great impact on the various Finno-Ugric languages...... You see, the Finno-Ugric speaking tribes were pushed further and further north by the Indo-European speaking peoples, first the Iranian speakers of what is now southern Russia and the Ukraine, as well as the Proto-Baltic and Proto-Slavic speakers..... So the Indo-Europeans lived to their south and pushed them further and further North, and during the centuries they were neighbors in Eurasia, mostly in What is now southern Russia and European Russia, west of the Urals, as well as in the steppe of what is now Kazakhstan...... These ancient Indo-European speakers lived just to the south of the ancient Finno-Ugric speakers and they were basically neighbors..... They would trade with each other, but they also didn't like each other very much, because they were both seen as outsiders by each other..... For example, in Finnish, the word for 'slave' is "orja".... This is derived from the name that the ancient Indo-European speakers of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language used for themselves, that is "Arya", meaning 'noble'....... Therefore, the Finno-Ugric speaking tribes of the North would have looked down on them as foreigners and outsider and viewed them as 'slaves'..... Perhaps they would make raids to the South and take some of the Indo-Iranians as slaves, or perhaps it was simply a pejorative term to refer to all Indo-Iranians because the Finno-Ugric speakers knew that the Indo-Iranians thought too highly of themselves and saw themselves as the 'noble-born' people, or it could be both....... Some of the numbers are clearly derived from Indo-European....... 1 - yksi 7 - seitsemän 8 - kahdeksan 9 - yhdeksän These are clearly derived from Indo-European numbers, perhaps 5 - viisi as well..... but these are at least partially derived from Finnic, then pronounced in a Finno-Ugric way and maybe combined with another Finnic number...... Two other words that show a close association with ancient Indo-European speaking peoples are the Finnish words "ukkonen", meaning 'thunder' and "taivas", meaning 'sky'....... 'taivas' is clearly derived from the ancient Indo-European word for a 'god', or 'deity', such as the Iranian 'daiva', and Sanskrit 'deva'...... and 'ukkonen' has the Finnic word 'ukko' in it, meaning 'old man'..... They clearly derived this from the ancient Indo-European god of the sky........ because for the ancient Proto-Indo-European speakers, the king of the gods was an old man, a father god, and king of all the gods, who sat on a mighty throne and ruled from the sky above....... He was the one who sent down lightning and thunder ⛈️....... This is where the ancient gods Zeus and Jupiter and the Vedic God Dyaus come from......

Hi, I have one question:how do you pronounce a and ä? o and ö? how these words different to each other in the pair aä and oö?
@FinnishPod1019 жыл бұрын
+Dũng Nguyễn Hi Dũng Nguyễn Viết! Thank you for the question! :) The Finnish 'a' is roughly the same as in the word 'after' when you pronounce it in the British English way. 'Ä' is then again roughly the same as in words 'cat' or 'hat', which,if written in "Finnish way", would be 'kät' and 'hät'. For 'ö', one near equivalent is the vowel in the British English word 'fur', which, if written in Finnish way, would be 'föö'. 'O' can be found in the word 'top'. Team FinnishPod101
@Pyovali6 жыл бұрын
Front and backvowel pairs do not occur in Finnish due to *vowel harmony* except in combination words(in which case the words are pronounced separately), so oä pair is impossible.

Your assumption how Finnish generally sounds like is probably based on Swedish comedy shows where angry and drunk middle-aged man shouts some gibberish that's supposed to be Finnish. She doesn't have any kind of special accent. This is what Finnish sounds like. Maybe you just thought it actually does sound good, but the only way to make sense of the sensation with your tiny Swedish brain is to assume that she must be Finnish Swede and have Swedish accent, because Finnish language is supposed to sound like trolls farting and it's only good for scaring little children. Take no offense, it's just friendly bantering.
