It's been a long time, KZbin! We've been absent for months, but as usual, we've not been idle. We made this app, a massive 10-hour course with dozens of interactive practices. That took us months to make. Then we took 3 months to make a paid course. That's how we could make the app in the first place: 1500+ persons pre-ordered the course on Kickstarter. That also allowed us to fund 10,000$+ of Godot development. Since early 2022, we sponsored dozens of bug fixes and new features like a revamped UI for Control nodes, a new animation curves editor, and now a built-in code formatter for GDScript 2.0 (in progress). Lastly, we've been working on two complete translations for our GDScript app: in Spanish and French. The community is already working on more here: github.com/GDQuest/learn-gdscript-translations/ With this chapter closed, I'll be making videos again in the coming months. You can expect at least one per week.

@cat The app is a quick introduction to programming in godot and the full course is much more in depth. They supply godot projects to follow along in that act like the app with checks to see if your code is written correctly. I'm a few chapters in now and its pretty good!

I'm glad I discovered this! I've been trying to get a group of my friends into coding. We've been working with Scratch so far, but I was wondering about how I'd bridge the gap from that to a real game engine. This is perfect for such a task! Thank you for your noble work. This will have a great effect on people learning to code. I really can't thank you enough

Thank you for sharing this resource! I'm about half-way through the course and this has been by far the most approachable one I've encountered. Its hard to digest and truly understand code without applying it in some way and a lot of project tutorials which aim to be beginner friendly, don't go out of their way to really explain why their code works, which makes it very hard to re-apply most of what you learn.

Thanks a lot for writing back about the app. It was a turning point for GDQuest too. When the community helped us fund it, it encouraged us to trust our insights and keep putting a lot of practical value in the learning material we put out. It was also a departure from relying on video tutorials and going more for written content with an interactive approach. The results from this app influenced our teaching method and informed the choices we made on the learning platform we created and launched this year.

This is truely amazing ! I've always been quite afraid to start learning coding because this seems like a huge endeavor (and I prefer making art than coding). I've started making games with RPG Maker so I didn't have to bother with code. Then I switched to Game Maker Studios 2, and I always stuck to the drag and drop system. For quite some time I wanted to use Godot but the visual scripting system never seemed to be really good. Maybe I'll start learning code after all, thanks to you :) Great job guys

I've gone through both the 2d and 3d tutorials thus far and while I did complete them successfully, I found I was struggling to implement it in my envisioned manner. I think a big part of that is due to a lack of practice. An interactive app looks stellar for helping fill this gap in. Thank you!

I had Godot for about a year and was stuck in tutorial hell because I only did the coding equivalent of "Monkey see: Monkey do.". Now I can finally understand what I am doing and finally start doing projects on my own! Thank you a lot for making this free too, I would have never seen it if it was not the case.

@jontay4199 Try completing thoroughly the free app to learn GDScript (you can find it on gdquest.com), then try the free interactive tour of the Godot editor (also on our site), then give the 2D vampire survivor tutorial a shot. we recently uploaded it on KZbin. After completing it, try expanding on it and customizing some things. That should get you to a good starting point.

I did the whole free course and found it good, but I still had some things that dissapointed me. The simpler lessons are easy to grasp. But some of the harder lessons (like for loops and dictionaries for example) are teached in the same way as if they have the same difficulty level (btw. I had the same issue with a course from another company, so maybe it's a general problem). They should have more examples and different exercises. Also often the exercises are almost the same as the lesson itself, therefore it is easy to remember things (copy tricks) instead of actually learn how to apply the code. I often read the lesson and it made complete sense, but in the exercise I had completelly no idea where to start even after reading all the hints. After looking at the solution it made sense again. I think the course is learning you the concepts, but not (enough) how to do it yourself.

So far very disappointed in the app. I was expecting it to teach me the rules of the syntax so I could write my own solutions to problems, instead it lectured me and expected me to memorize the lecture and regurgitate it during the test. I was able to make my own solutions, but it was because I had watched a different tutorial on Godot first. This, to me, is another lecture-based attempt at "teaching" that doesn't click with me whatsoever.
@Gdquest2 жыл бұрын
Would you have more info on what you disliked in particular? What do you mean by syntax rules for instance that's not covered in the app? And at which lesson/practice did you stop? Please mind that this app's designed for people who've never written code before, so there's quite a bit to explain that if you watched tuts and coded before you may know or not care about but that our target audience doesn't know and needs to learn first.

Some feedback: I took the GDscript from 0 course a year ago with 0 knowledge about CS and despite it being very informational, after finishing it I felt I hadn't really understood coding. Then I took CS50 and I started to understand how programming works. I think my problem was starting to code using preexisting classes, properties and methods (such as rotate() and move_local_x() ) which I didn't understand where they came from. What's an object, a class, a method and a property and why are some functions "already made" for me to use while I had to write the code for others? How do I read and understand the documentation? It's a super simple concept but the approach from the GD course didn't fill that in for me. Just my 2 cents. If someone is having trouble with the beginning I recommend understanding the fundamentals of object oriented programming to really understand the context of the lessons.
