I'm native german speaker and listen just for fun to this. It may improve your listening skills, but there some sentences that never said like this in Germany, for example 24:59 "Die Regensaison naht". There is nothing like a "rainy season" in Germany. And also 12:48: The study of "Computer Science" is not translated when speaking german, it's called "Computer Science" in german too, not "Computerwissenschaften". 34:21 "Es ist mir ein Vergnügen", it's correct, but no one ever say this in Germany, people would say something like "Gern geschehen", or "Gerne" or "Bitte" or "Selbsverständlich"

@Pepo G Well, you would rather say "es war mir ein Vergnügen" after someone says "thank you". "Es ist mir ein Vergnügen" just isn't something to say in a normal conversation. "Mit Vergnügen" would by possible though.

When I was active duty, I lived there for 3 years and my wife is a native German. It’s a hard thing to grasp, there are so many ways to say something, plus you have your regional dialects and then there’s always the High and Low German that you have to worry about….not to mention all the tenses and cases. I find that if it’s spoken at the rate that’s in this video, I can understand it, but when I listen to my in-law’s, I pick up every 4th word or so.

What I am worried about is, what if we become bored if we see the same situation or maybe you have a different approach in the program to make the lesson become fresh again every time we study the situations. I have a real problem with words that contain ich. All these tutorials say it is pronounced ick but I listen to German Schlager and euro pop music all the time and not a single German singer pronounces it like this. They all say isch and this is the same for every word containing ich. They pronounce it isch, disch, nischt, etc. All of them, even their big music stars like Helene Fischer. The odd thing is, I was listening to some songs by one of Schlager's original icons, Wolfgang Petry, and in his earlier days he pronounced it as ich but in the concerts towards the end of his career even he started to use isch, disch. I have never been able to find out why this is but, if German music stars are anything to go by, then isch seems to be the most popular pronunciation these days.

The problem with such language courses is that it ignores the role of word order, and so it becomes a matter of memorization rather than thought. The critical task in learning a language properly is learning how to think in that language. For example, German does not ask "What is your name?", German asks "What call you (self)?" German does not ask "What's up?", it asks "What goes?".

@@chantyclause Well, I first learned German in the Berlitz School of Languages in total immersion with my teacher. This was one-on-one instruction. Only German was spoken there. That was Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with three 45-minute sessions for six months. It did not include grammar learning. You learn like a child learns it from his parents. It eventually "comes" and makes sense. I learned enough to get around Germany on many trips there trying to put myself in situations that required me to speak and listen to the language. After living there for two years, I took two years (4 semesters) of formal or High German in college. This is where I was forced to learn the grammar. There are some rules but not always. The grammar is not so easy but to conjugate sentences properly you have to learn it. One of the difficulties of learning German is that you do have Genders like in English. Our English is much less complicated because inanimate nouns and pronouns are usually Neuter (but there are a few exceptions). In German every noun and pronoun must be learned and memorized along with its Gender. This is where Der (masculine), Die (feminine), Das (neuter), and the prefixes of every noun and pronoun must be memorized. Knowing this is critical for properly conjugating the sentence. Having said that, I will tell you that German people will be able to understand you even when you make mistakes. So don't worry! People there are to than happy to help you out and actually love that you are trying to learn their language!

Hi, this helps so much but if you don't mind. Can you explain the change of the verb for every personal pronoun? Ich gehe zu Schule while in second person singular it uses Du ghest zu Schule. What makes it different? Thank you!
@ouino
@ouino 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you for your comment. I am happy to help! The change with every personal pronoun is called a conjugation. This is very common in many languages. If you think about it, we have the same thing in English. We say “I go to school” and “he goes to school” or “I am happy” and “you are happy”. The same verb with a different pronoun changes in spelling. In English, most verbs are only changed with the third person, in German the change in spelling happens with almost every personal pronoun. I hope this clears things up a little. We have many lessons in our full program dedicated to explaining German conjugation in much more detail.

This is a very helpful video, thanks! It would be great if the translations much more literal though. It is better to have them sound slightly odd to english speakers so that we can see how german is really spoken, than to have it sound perfect in english. For example, instead of "Thank you", "Vielen dank" should probably be translated "Much thanks", that way it is much more litteral, and one can learn to understand the words as well, instead of just the phrases. Thanks for the great video!

@@ouino Japanese has a very formal language as well, but I don't understand much of it although I took an everyday conversation study when I was stationed in Okinawa in the '60. Alas, I have forgotten 99% of it, except greetings, hello and thank you. Japanese folks appreciate Americans that respect them and a bit of their language.

Hello, My name is Helga. This video is great! I’m visually impaired student. I’m trying to learn german. Do you think that on your videos when you guys are announcing the germn words before the main conversation, can you announce english translation of each german word, prior the conversation? That will be very helpful since I am not able to see the screen? Thanks so much for reading!

Huh, that's an interesting video! Many thanks to the author of the channel! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

You need a literal word for word translation to learn the words and sentence structure- that way your not memorizing , but learning the words and the way they are used- for instance - the wor naturlich is translated as "of course"- when its obviously supposed to be-"naturally" - which is the same meaning with no disconnected memorization at all
