I don't necessarily use grids all the time unless it's a longer design piece. I start by designing something I like and designing the grid around it that way, I don't feel constraint. For longer projects, it. helps just to make everything different be visually cohesive. Great video!

Yes, grids are something of a constraint, but it forces one to become more creative. Animation director Chuck Jones had a set list of rules (constraints) for the Road Runner cartoons. Sometimes, by putting yourself in the box (or grid), it helps you think outside of it.
