Lora, you are the best! I enjoy a lot learning with you. And you have a very nice smile that makes me more easy the technical difficulties. Thank you very much from my heart!

Timing is so crucial to get the rhythm. Lora plays this perfectly! Hokum bowing gets in your head all day, and in my dreams. I’m a slow learner. Thank you Lora.
@RedDesertFiddle5 жыл бұрын
You'll get it, Terry! Hokum is a rhythm that guitarists use too. It is a very very common rhythmic pattern....that's why it's in your head. (it's a challenge to learn to do it on violin....but you'll get it!)

Red Desert Fiddle Thank you Lora for being my inspiration to learn how to hokum bow. I find this fun with a challenge! My Mother, and grandmother were Oklahoma “Johnson” style fiddlers from way back!

Red Desert Fiddle HA! HA! I don’t know about in my blood. We have a family story about my Mother’s Oklahoma pioneers. Her grandfather Had a Strad, and lost it in a card game! I really don’t believe this, but I did inherit my grandmothers old Magginni. Mom had to get it completely restored. Thanks!

My first intro to hokum bowing was from Carol Ann Wheeler. She taught it too fast, and I didn’t understand the timing, but Lora explains it slowly, and so much better. I can connect with her on the rhythm.

The A string is playing a bosa-nova ie. What a rimshot of a snare drum does. A good way to think of the pattern.
@RedDesertViolin5 жыл бұрын
Oh, wow, indeed, that's exactly what it does! That's why it grooves so nicely!

Another awesome one, Lora ! I'll be working on this drill on the morrow. I'm tempted to get a start on it now but its after mid-nite and the neighbors would go nuts ha ha.

Once you get the groove of the hokum pattern, you'll never forget it! I can see you are working on it, because you are also learning "Back Up and Push". Good luck to you!

Alexander Dmitriev Well, it's kind of like learning IPv6 addressing ;-) It makes no sense until you do the slow work of learning the basics. Then practice, practice, practice. Let me know how it goes.
@alexanderdmitriev493110 жыл бұрын
Oh, I think I've caught the basics of this technique! But you are right, now I cannot make out the sense of it, except it's a very good exercise:) Would you please mention some tune with this bowing?
@RedDesertFiddle10 жыл бұрын
Alexander Dmitriev Orange Blossom Special. See my tutorial videos on it over at my RedDesertViolin KZbin channel. Here's one about the bow pattern from that series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYKlmnuwndWGpNk

Alexander Dmitriev Also, Alexander, I have a very nice tutorial on the tune "Back Up and Push" ...it is a standard that every fiddler needs to know, and the B part features the Hokum Bowing, but the chords are not as hard as on the Orange Blossom. If you just search on KZbin "Red Desert Fiddle Back Up and Push", it will take you to about 8 very nice videos.
