If you have wool or any other block in your inventory but not your hotbar then you can look at a block of the type already placed and center click on your mouse and the block will go to a free hotbar slot.

if u wanna do the redstone thing now build the machine then place red stone torch on redstone dust then after its lit up break red stone torch and then break and place redstone fast and it will work
