I appreciate that you are now sharing how to do upholstery after so many years, it's a lost art. There are many of us restoring older cars at home, don't have the money to have parts recovered professionally and are willing to try and do it ourselves. Thank you for passing along what you've learned.

I was replacing the factory covers on my 24 year old truck today, i realized that the driver seat had a broken wire and so i added 4 in a latice manner on top of the replacement one. Then i added a layer like this using the back vinyl off one of the old seats and finally spent a couple hours cutting out foam pieces and gluing on replacements. I spent in total about $90 since i had glue and foam from previous repairs i did; im pretty happy with end results given i had never done seat work before.

Wow. Lovin your channel. Just found it. I'm a home sewer. Idabble in home upholstery (sofas, sofa chairs, dining room chairs, ottomans, etc.). Self taught, way before KZbin. Never bought a book or instructions manual. Just took things apart carefully, made notes. Later I bought a Consew industrial machine to help with certain jobs like cording and making cushions; to sew things my home machine couldn't handle. I love everything about upholstery. Never tried my hand at auto or boat work (and don't plan to). What I'm finding in your videos (the few I've watched so far), are a lot of great tips that carry over to furniture upholstery. I'm curious to know, where you learned to do this work? Who taught you all these tips? How did you start - or where did you start? Hey, maybe do a video on your history in this.

Hello Kefir, I am so glad you found me. Like you, I taught myself everything I know without help starting 44 years ago. A tip, if you are doing this for income, never limit yourself. All upholstery is related. Auto and furniture will give you a decent income. However, marine will make you more and aircraft will make you many times more. Just sayin'. The old ways are sometimes the best ways. I fix cars and trucks but started long ago when you made many of your own gaskets (Linoleum Company's SoLd Gasket Materials) but backing the frame or foam, keeps it from cutting thru the foam, time after time or use! Drivers side wears out first, so reinforce the French seams and lube the door hinges. As so many don't! It is like going to "Quick Lube" shops and they don't own a grease gun! Or two drops of motor oil on hood hinges. My customers got a business card, list on back of future possible repairs, but a thanks on the front. This was a dealer, I stayed busy while others read books or played cards... DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, Retired! Love the tip, keep it up. I make hogs rings from electric fence wire, own 2 SnapOn pliers, 1 at 45 degrees angle.

Hi, Cathy and I may be attempting to make covers for our 51 Chev pickup. Is there a grid you lay over the springs on top of the burlap before the cotton or is the burlap enough to keep the cover from getting out of shape? Are there different grades of burlap, heavier or more dense? Thanks for the help. Brian and Cathy
@oldschoolautoupholstery
@oldschoolautoupholstery Жыл бұрын
Hi Cathy! I use what I think is a standard burlap for upholstery. I get it from my upholstery supplier. I think a medium or heavy weight would do just fine. Foam, cotton, or the seat cover won't lose its shape. I hope I answered correctly, if not let me know. Thanks for watching!
