I am a sport pilot, but I am going down to Tampa with Rand Vollmer to get the private pilot glider rating, separate from sport. No license, no medical, powered glider endorsement, 18,000 ft, international flight allowed. The pipistrel sinus is a powered glider and with the PPGR, you can do just about everything a private pilot can do, except get an IFR rating. Also allowed to fly at night if plane is equipped. Very special rating.

I´ve watched almost every video of Pipistrel with Rand Vollmer, very symphatetic and friendly instructor pilot. The Pipistrel Sinus Flex Max with extended range is my dream plane, nice choice you made, hope you have an awesome experience there.

Glad you showed our sport of soaring. I got my SNG ENG LAND when I was 18, but I enjoy flying gliders way more. Its more of a sport, and you closer to nature. Your mind is your engine. I fly a Discus b!

Funny when i started to learn to fly a glider about 25 years ago people have also said that kids play too many video games and are not interested in flying anymore. I don't think that was the true reason back then and it isn't true today. You gotta make a good offer and have a proper community. Nowadays some german clubs offer flat rates. Fly as much as you want (towed by a winch) for a monthly fee. That's how you get kids in the air.

Love your videos! I gotta disagree with that dude though about kids and the problem being screen time. When you’re coming out of school with 30k in debt and a plane newer than 50 years old costs twice your salary you’re going to find another hobby.

In most cases, you don't need to buy the whole airplane. Many people rent them, or own collectively, thus decreasing the cost of purchasing by many times. So, for example, a 100k plane becomes a 10% share worth 10k, the same applies for the fixed costs, like hangar rental, insurance, etc.

"Screens" are a multi decade old excuse why you can't motivate new people to join your sport. Has never been true imo.

I’m 54 and and the only reason why I gotten into airplane ✈️ is because this little screen on my hands, so technology is a increaser rather than a demise to inspire people of all age to getting into this frontier of not on the ground!

I'm closer to your age than I am to someone who's 30, and 💯agree, the technology (foreflight, gps, autopilot, Rotax) in the past 10 years in aviation has made it appealing. "kids these days" is always a red flag. Rich seems like a nice person, though, and that looks like a pleasant place for a gliderport!

What about landing? Or do you rely on gravity to do the job for you?
@DNModels
@DNModels 2 жыл бұрын
That is a myth. It is NOT cheaper, because you pay for the tow as well. It gets cheaper when you get to stay for hours in the air on a single tow.
@kaihorstmann2783
@kaihorstmann2783 8 ай бұрын
That is what you do after training: take a tow and be gone for the rest of the day, or at least hours.

@@mauriceevans6546 Yes, good clarification. I was thinking of getting away from the fiberglass and corporate branding for a bit and getting up in the air. I'm planning on doing the rating at a local soaring club.

I don't believe in unpowered flight but I certainly appreciate the much higher engineering competence that goes into their design. It's not just a tractor with a crude continental like a cessna is. They have very particular shapes because aerodynamics demands it. You'll also note that none of them are riveted sheet for the same reason. So if your starting point for a powered plane is the engineering discipline of a glider you'll have proportionally better fuel economy. Such a plane might have literally 10x better fuel economy than a 172 at same speed. And with higher speed you can be efficient with smaller wings so a higher speed plane can be much cheaper ironically. Scale the wings down to maybe 60%, similar for tail, strap on 2 tiny jets and you can go to europe, maybe even hawaii for pennies. A complex composite kayak can be had retail for 1000$ which can tell you they can be hammered out dirt cheap if only done right.

I've seen a project of a jet glider. It was a single seater, composite structure plane. Could do aerobatics and fly at around 200 km/h.

@@vsabadazh I was thinking more like 6-700. 200 any crude prop plane can do

For sure in the US where most operations are commercial, and aerotow only at almost all sites. In most of Europe you have more clubs where the member do the work as volunteers, and at most sites winch tow is the default which costs 5-10€/$ per tow. You pay with you time which you spend on the airport to keep the whole operation running when not flying yourself though.
