I have always struggled with foliage. Last summer I ordered a fancy foliage brush, which cost close to $60 with shipping. It was meh. Kinda got the job done, but was a bit difficult to use. But the foliage brushes I made following your directions here using brushes I was *going to throw away* beat the fancy expensive one all to heck! I happily painted beautiful trees & shrubbery all evening long. Thank you so much for this tip. This is the bomb!

I didn’t dare to try this for weeks but today I did it. Why is it so much fun to destroy the brush? 😂 thank you for this great tutorial. I’m looking forward to paint so many trees!

This is the best bang cutting tutorial on the internet! I'm totally cutting my own bangs now and I think they'll come out great if just do everything you did to the brush.........🤣😁😁 Oh wait! I forgot to ask! Should I put masking fluid in my bangs first? I want them to come out exactly like you showed so I think adding the masking fluid will be the correct action plan.

I learned from my hairdresser how to cut bangs. Gather what you want for bangs, comb them straight up, cut evenly (after measuring how long you want them) and cut straight across. When you comb them down they are perfectly layered!! 😊

Great tutorial, and I'll make that brush for sure. It reminds me of my rotary brush, but this one might make it even easier to get those foliage marks. It'll be a great addition. Subscribed and saved. Thank you!

I love your turorials, Sarah! Paul Clark talked about how to make a home made foliage brush years ago in one if his videos. I think he used it to paint grass. :)

Great demonstration! I'm almost tempted to jam some masking fluid up into the base of the bristles and let it dry to splay the bristles out a bit like yours.

Will any brush type work, i.e. acrylic, oil or should it only be a ruined watercolor brush? Thank you!

Whatever brush you want to use should totally work.

OMG what a flashback I got when you talked about cutting your own bangs. When I was in the 8th grade I decided to do just that. The right side was still longer than the left. So I tried to even it. Then the left side was longer. I kept on trying to even it all out - and eventually there was nothing left of my bangs. Nothing! I was so embarrassed to go to school, but what could I do? Couldn’t stay at home for a few weeks until it grew back. 😅This was over 50 years ago and I still remember how stupid I felt!
