Excellent video! I was just going to add an extra tip. When I first lay out my pieces, before I sew them together, I will take a picture with my phone so that after I sew them and lay them back down, I don't accidentally switch them around. I always have that picture to refer back to, to make sure I'm sewing them together in the arrangement that I wanted. I always enjoy your videos, Kimberly.

Kimberly I think you are doing a good job. I have a suggestion for newbies, when reading a pattern the arrows indicate what way to press your seams. - I know you show in video but to point it out on the patterns may be helpful. - I have been sewing for a few years and it was only about 2 years ago I found out what those arrows were for.

Hi Kimberly and crew! I’m really enjoying these videos. It’s a great refresher for an old seamstress/quilter! I do have a suggestion, especially for the newbies. Can you please explain the placement of the ruler on the fabric? Line on fabric/ line off of the edge of fabric. That one tripped me up years ago and maybe it would help the newbies avoid the frustration 😀

Something I do when I get solids is immediately label them on the selvage with a fine tip Sharpie (eg: Bella White 9900-98). It has saved me SO MUCH MISERY since I started labeling my solids. I used to pull out a random color, run out, then have to hope I chose correctly when ordering more.

These are nice videos/tutorials. One can always learn something new or be reminded of the most efficient way....I'm curious, when you cut the little slice off the left edge to give yourself a straight edge, how did you know you were cutting straight of grain, or is that not important?
@SmittenKitten.5 жыл бұрын
I don't think she's worrying too much about keeping it perfectly straight grain-wise. This is somewhat more casual. (At least that's my impression!) I used to try to cut perfectly "straight," but gave up because it killed all the fun! Haha.

Not sure if you did it elsewhere, but for newbies you could explain that you are using a 1/4" foot on your machine to make the correct seam allowance. Or have them measure the width of their foot to mark the 1/4".

Really like your videos. Wondering when you later your fabrics and start the first cut for straight edge, what are you lining up to get that straight edge?
@FatQuarterShopTX Жыл бұрын
Hello Mary Jo! If there is a stripe or a direction I line that up - if not I just try to cut a sliver off.
@judyward035 жыл бұрын
Kimberly, I'm a worrier, so I just need a "warm fuzzy" confirmation. You showed two ways to cut our fabric in this video. If I took your suggestion and made a swath sheet so am using the set of fabrics called for in block two and if I choose to cut 4 1/2" strips from each of the 9 fabrics, please confirm that I will have enough of these fabrics for the remainder of the quilt. This may be a silly question (like, of course you would plan it that way). But since I can't see the patterns for the other blocks, I would feel more at peace with confirmation.
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Judy! We plan our fabric cutting for fat quarters with about 2” margin (i.e. we use a maximum of a 16” x 18” area of fabric). Cutting out a small swatch should not harm your fabric requirements, but if you are worried about not having enough fabric or miscutting, you can choose to have a “back up” fat quarter or two. Hope this helps!
@judyward035 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but what I really wanted to know is how generous an allowance was made for cutting the required shapes for the whole quilt. If I cut 4 1/2” strips for all 9 of the fabrics (like Kimberly demonstrated for 6 of them), will I have enough fabric to complete the quilt?
@susannebell77295 жыл бұрын
@@judyward03 I had this problem when cutting..I cut the whole width instead of just exacty what was needed (as Kimberly showed for the second cutting option). I decided to cut out all the blocks and realized I was short on two colors. It was easy enough to just substitute with another color from the kit. No one will notice.
@judyward035 жыл бұрын
@@susannebell7729 Thank you, that is what I wanted to know! Is the information "out there" as to what to cut for each block? 8/17 Update: I just heard that the pattern is included when you buy the kit. The rest of us have to wait for the weekly block patterns.

I noticed that when pinning you did one from the top fabric and the other from the bottom. Does that help with stability?
@reneegoodwin39995 жыл бұрын
I wondered this too!
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristin! It helps a little, but really pinning every 2-3" helps stabilize the fabric the most :)
@tobythompson555 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Question. The written instructions/pattern that came w the fabric kit look like we are instructed to first assemble 3 blocks across into one row (across/horizontal), but in the video the first assembly step of the blocks was done assembling 3 blocks vertically. In the end it doesn’t matter which way, but I want to know if I’m reading the pattern instructions incorrectly. Thanks.
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Toby! Kimberly actually is assembling the 3 squares into a horizontal row. When she's sewing the blocks vertically she is chain-piecing to save time and make sure the blocks will line up correctly vertically. When she goes to assemble the block she cuts the thread in between the three squares so she can sew them into the correct, horizontal row. You do not have to chain-piece; it may be less confusing to go row by row. Let us know if we can do anything else to help!

Terry Clark Hi love the loving the Ultimate Quilt videos. But I have a question my Stripe block came out a little under 12 and a half inches. Will this be ok. And what did I do wrong. Thank you!
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Terry! Kimberly says that even her blocks will end up a bit smaller than 12 ½”, varying about 1/8” or so. That is normal, and it will work out okay! If your block is ending up smaller by ¼” or more, then you can check these things. The number 1 thing to check is your ¼” seam allowance. If your seam allowance is greater than ¼” that would result in your block being smaller at the end. You can also check your pressing. If you are not pressing right against your stitch line, that can also result in a smaller block. Setting your seams before pressing is a good tip to help get a good flat press. If you have checked all these things, you can also try a scant ¼” seam, which is sewing just inside the ¼” seam allowance. Sometimes fabrics, if they are thicker, will take up more room when you fold it back to press, so the scant ¼” seam allowance helps even things out.
@SmittenKitten.5 жыл бұрын
Your quarter-inch seam is too large. That's the main issue when blocks come in undersized. If it's too small, you could re-do it, making sure you shrink your seams a teensy bit! I used to struggle like CRAZY with undersized blocks.

What is the best sewing machine for a beginner
@FatQuarterShopTX5 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephanie! You can start quilting with any sewing machine that has a straight stitch. What brand and model mostly depends on your budget and preference. You can easily start sewing with a low cost machine from any store, such as the Brother and Singer brands. EverSewn is a brand we like that has a wide range of sewing machines for any budget, and they have the Sparrow 15 which is in the price range of other widely available brands. As you advance, at that point you may feel like you want to upgrade, in which case we suggest you visit your local sewing machine dealers to try out different brands and find your personal preference. If you're considering EverSewn you can find them online here: www.fatquartershop.com/quilting-notions/sewing-machines-and-accessories
