I had some challenges planned for this month, but due to a hurling related injury I had to put them on hold. With a broken thumb and my hand in a cast, I wasn’t sure what exactly I could learn. I am on my summer holidays so I don’t want to waste my time away from school. Thankfully, an idea popped into my head as I scrolled through Instagram, and saw a video of UFC fighter Paige VanZant preforming a really cool moonwalk. Great. I don’t need any dexterity in my hands to learn how to this.
I grabbed my laptop and set out researching the origins of the moonwalk and how to do it. It was first performed by Michael Jackson on March 25th 1983, in front of a live audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Two months later, the dance move became world famous when Jackson performed it during a television special, Motown 25. From then on it became part of popular culture.
Everyone has heard of the moonwalk, but you don’t see many people doing it. I looked up how to moonwalk on Google and read some instructions on ‘How things are done’. I couldn’t gasp the concept in written format, so I went on KZbin to find a visual aid and clicked into the ‘Mihran Tv’ KZbin channel. The instructions here were very clear and easy to follow, and thanks to them the mantra “slide and switch’ is engrained in my mind forevermore.
Despite the clarity of my KZbin tutor, I struggled to coordinate my movements during my first practise session. My balance was off and couldn’t accurately time the switch of my left and right feet. My arm and head movements were all over the place, and I realised that once again I may have underestimated this challenge.
At the end of my 20-minute introductory lesson I checked back on the footage, and to my surprise I was even worse at moonwalking than I thought I was in my head. Unperturbed, I kept practising and practising, slowly but surely my timing started to pick up and my hamstrings hurt less and less. From time to time, I actually felt like I was throwing down some pretty good moonwalks.
After 1 hour and 30 minutes over a 5-day period, I felt as though I had the grasp of the moonwalk and decided to call it a day. While I don’t think I will be winning in any dance competitions in the near future, at least I have the basis of the moonwalk. When pubs and clubs reopen in Ireland, there might be a few shocked faces, good and bad.

I think the ratio of floor to sock slippyness plays a big part in how easy it is to moonwalk 😄
