Although you have lived in the USA at a very young age for a long span of time and learnt English as you were a kid, you still think in German! This video is an absolute proof to the notion of mutter sprache! and why we use some how sacred mother as an adjective to describe it!

It is all about learning well the Akkusativ and Dativ, and which verbs we have to use with them, ich glaube

For that, I suggest trying to keep in mind whether the verb is transitive or not. I think that generally, if not entirely, delineates whether you'll need accusative (transitive) or dative (intransitive). When you tell someone something, it is only transitive in the sense of the thing you are saying (hence the thing you say, if specified at all, will be in the accusative) while the person you are saying it to will be in the dative, because the verb sagen is not directly affecting the person, if that makes sense. You can tell something to someone, but you can't simply tell/say someone in that accusative (transitive) sense.
