I'm doing exactly what you're saying in this video. I take my puppy that's sensitive to new smell, noise and that is afraid of dogs to everywhere I can to desensitize and socialize him. The hardest part was to find a mature and experienced dog who can deal with my puppy's nervous energy. I've talked dozens and dozens of dog owners during my walk and finally found three dogs that can help my puppy. After I watched this video, I became confident that I'm on a right track. Yeah, 8-9 months is SUCH a sensitive age. My dog had a different problem, he was over-socialized and put into situations he wasn't comfortable in and the owner trusted older dogs to "teach him manners" - meaning forcefully flip him onto his back, unintentionally hurt him in rough games etc. A bit after he turned one, he became extremely fear aggressive and was triggered by almost everything. At 18 months I was asked to take him because his situation had become unmanageable to the previous owner and they couldn't see how to work him out of it. Now, at seven years old, he's still not the best at socializing but has his few close friends and is capable of making new connections with other dogs. I'm still extremely careful which dogs I let him play with, though; took us too much work to dig through all the puppyhood trauma.

I have a dog that is totally under socialized due to getting him a month before covid came out. He is still extremely difficult to keep from barking at every noise. He's aggressive but not so bad after we introduced him to a couple of other dogs. But he is still super skidish. So we did okay but I had no idea there was a door that had to be met and over come. He does okay somtimes and other times he is just a big loud annoying dog. But he is a sweet boy. He is so loving. Just very dominant and loud when he sees other dogs or people. He has never bit anyone or another dog though. He's up and down. Lol. But this video explains a lot to me about his mind set.

I’m so blessed with a 3 month old puppy that’s so calm when meeting other dogs. He takes small steps during socializing. First he was scared scared, then he started getting interested in dogs, then he started to sniff every dog I let him meet. Now he checks them out, decides to sniff or not, lays on the ground and barks/communicates, if they give him a go he will play, if not, he’ll wait until we move again.

Wow that poor poodle. I feel for dogs that are not socialized or taken out their comfort zone. I think one of the most telling things of a fearful dog, when juxtaposed to an aggressive dog, is that the fearful dog can react a bit, then repeatedly pull back and hide behind an owner or person they know. A truly aggressive dog isn't gonna do that nearly as much, if at _all._ Always watch your dog's body language to figure out whether or not they're scared and defensive, or actually angry. There is a surprisingly vast amount of things you can learn from how a dog is feeling or thinking by just watching them move.

There is no “ one fix” for such a dog and there’s no age limit to helping them. We adopted a retired show dog at three years old. We have many years experience with this breed, which can be difficult-Kerry Blue Terrier. We were his fourth home in three countries and he was very reactive to other dogs and men. We didn’t put him in reactive sit like in this video, which would have resulted in someone getting hurt. Instead, he was put into a reliable, consistent routine of walks, meals and play.

One thing that some people get wrong: tail wagging doesn't necessarily mean friendly. It means getting ready for action. In a well adjusted dog, action usually means play. But tail wagging can also mean, "I'm done messing around with you--I'm 'bout to mess you up good".

YAAAASSSS! NEED TO HAVE THE CORRECT HELPER DOGS & SPACE TO BE ABLE TO HELP THESE DOGS! And in less than 6 months dogs like this absolutely end up becoming extremely overreactive, often fear aggressive, have no clue how to interact with other dogs (or with many dogs, don't know how to interact or exist in the world), have chronic high baseline anxiety & negative emotional state, can't be walked, owners are terrified & everyone is super stressed, frustrated, confusion all around. Plus the dog may have a bite record by then, generally not super serious or involving actual intent to injure, but a bite record is a bite record all the same. I also just love & appreciate that you don't correct dogs that are already living in an aversive emotional state & as you said, as far as they know they don't have any other option at all! This is a really really great video. You understand dogs have emotions and needs and natural dog behaviour & how to read them and that's not something we often see in this industry. Lots of obedience, lots of control & restraint, lots of management... not a lot of pros that understand how to work with behaviour vs training cues.

He still is fearful of other dogs and I tried everything I could to help him get over it. I felt I could not rehome...I kept him and it was my responsibility to keep him. He is a sweetheart to me and other humans, but another dog? NO WAY! Now he is old and still cant be with other dogs...my other 2 have passed. How do you look for a find a good, trustworthy dog trainer. Like what do you look for or look into to figure that out?
@lillieberger28833 жыл бұрын
A balanced trainer. Avoid positive only trainers that want to fix everything with treats. I would steer toward trainers that specialize in larger dominant breeds. Ask a lot of questions before you sign up, see if you can find references
@kameroncuk65573 жыл бұрын
Ha! Good question.......Look for someone that DOESNT use treats, prong collars, or e-collars because these are signs that the trainer has no idea what they are doing or taking about. They should have some knowledge about the growth and development cycles of dogs as they age and understand the vast amount of aggressions that exist and which are not serious and which are serious. If they want you to leave the dog with them for training, RUB AWAY! Any competent trainer should be teaching you about what is typical for that dogs age and what that is going through and the TEACH you how to deal/handle it. Bottom line, most of the issues people go through with a dog is, the persons inability to be the one to guide and teach their dog and instead just overly love them with no boundaries or discipline in life, when in reality all young dogs are taught by the pack(family)what they can and cant do(boundaries). And unlike Lillie Berger, "dominant Breeds" doesn't exist........specific breeds do exist for protection, hunting, herding....etc but they all have traits that may or may not exist in their domain, and dominance has nothing to do with it. I hope that helps you in your journey, if have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I only came here because it popped up on my feed and I'm really not impressed with any of the youtube trainers out here. As a side note, I have been in training and behaviour for the past 12+ years as well as running my own dog daycare during that time, and had the pleasure of being allowed to see how dogs handle situations while attending daycare (note, plenty of dogs wont let you into their world/secrets without trust) Cheers

@@zamim.aka-arima_z4753 for basic obedience your average positive only trainer is ideal and more than sufficient. I would not recommend a trainer who relies on any form of (physical) coercion for absolute basics like sit, stay, come, etc. Not particularly because of any ideologies I hold but because at this early of a stage assuming your dog doesn't know anything I'd much more prioritize keeping their confidence up and getting them used to learning. It's extremely discouraging if your first introduction to training is "If I don't do the thing my owner asks my neck hurts". Further, it'll get you in the habit of understanding your pup's motivations and give you a leg up on any future behaviors. If you understand what your dog wants and then can convince them that the fastest way to get the thing they want is doing what you want first, you'll get a pretty strong start. (And simultaneously get very far ahead of most of the training community for what it's worth) Feel free to do what you want afterwards, but a dogs first introduction to training should be pretty low pressure and enjoyable.

She wanted to meet other dogs, but was scared to death. She actually ran off to greet other dogs, but came running back in a hurry. Some dogs were just to aggressive. We got her to keep our old lab company after our other lab passed away. He was good and with her. He passed away last year in September. We decided to get another lab. He is seven months now and she dominates him. They get along good, but outside she will chase him down and Roll him on the ground. He eggs it on sometimes. They seem to be playing but I see his fur go up as he is running by. I really don’t want them to play that ruff. Q, my lab is getting bigger and definitely out weighs her now. I know one day Q will turn and pummel her. Plus I’m worried Q will think it’s normal to be chased and thrown to the ground and will do the same to other dogs. Now when I see them getting out of control, I put them back in the house. How can I stop her behavior. I know she probably is insecure. She does act like a bully. What can I do?

My dog was undersocialized, but idk in a different way? She was a small dog, 12ish lbs, and she’d cower behind us and/or run away, only barking at them and not running if she was safe with a fence/railing/window between her and them. She could get used to some dogs if necessary, like if we needed a dogsitter for more than a couple days and the dogsitter had (an)other dog(s), but then next time, even with the same dogs, it would be straight back to cowering. Back when she was younger and we took her to obedience classes that had a bunch of other dogs, she mostly sat right under our chair, and the other dogs didn’t really come over much, other than a tiny, like MAYbe 4lbs pup who she cowered from even though she was like 3x as big as him. The only time she ever really growled would be once in a while when she had a REALLY good treat she thought we were trying to take, or if she was playfighting. She was such a good dog. Loved people so much, even if it took her a bit with other dogs.

Unfortunately, we had a horrible trainer from Pets mart for just early basic training, but the trainer brought her dogs and didn't keep them in check. They were huge compared to Winnie (she was between 4&5 months old), and then covid happened. I've done my best to train her on my own, but there was a reason why we had training set up! She is very under socialized, and I've asked so many people who claim their dogs are "perfect" but never could help me out. And I may have to get a new puppy, if she cannot be trained properly,BTW she's a sheepadoodle.

My new stray is under socialized. I’ve had her for about 3 months. I’ve been getting her to listen to commands with and without leash, making sure she’s safe with kids/delivery people. I’m starting to take her out and I want to take her to a dog park, but whenever she’s in a big new environment(dog park), she gets super scared and just tries to sit on my toes. Idk where to find other dogs because I’m really shy irl

Had same issues with my pup he was fearful and super sensitive and we pushed him too far too fast and now he's 3 years old and quickly resorts to warnings/aggression if he feels overwhelmed. You said it's hard to fix it at this point, which I agree. It's hard to gain his trust back now. If you can address this that would be great. Thanks!

I truly feel like I failed my dog. He loves people, but has never like dogs. He always gets anxious and freaks out when he sees a dog, ever since he was a puppy. I would take him with me everywhere, Walmart, tracker supply, etc. he has been in the middle of many family reunions and got along with everyone. But when there is a dog he gets so scared. We have tried to re socialize him but the dogs in the neighborhood just want to fight. I was walking him and all of a sudden a tiny white dog started barking at him. Mind you I have a German shepherd. I want to take him to a dog park and just sit at a distance and slowly bring him closer and closer, to desensitize him

I have a black standard poodle that looks just like Theo but she’s a girl. She’s a year old. She’s not aggressive but boy is she reactive. When she sees another dog while on a leash she cries, screeches and barks and lunges wanting to play with them. If I let her off the leash she will jump on them and try to play with them until no end to the point that the dogs are trying to get away from her. How tf do I get her to stop. 😭😭😭 and also if a dog doesn’t like her, she kinda likes to egg them on by invading their space. Lol. But other then that she is such a darling.

I have a red standard poodle that just turned 5 months old and he’s terrified of strangers. He barks at them and then tries to run away and sometimes even has accidents. He’s been going to a dog daycare during the week and the employees there said at first he was really hesitant but as time went on, he loved playing with the other dogs and meeting new dogs. So hopefully, he stops being afraid of new people and dogs soon. Fingers crossed! Edit: On walks, my dog is either super reactive towards people or he’s hesitant around them. He saw a guy walking his black labrador and pushing his baby around on a stroller and my dog wanted to run up and bark at them while pulling on the leash. Later, he saw a mailman come out of the mail truck and he tucked his tail in and tried to run away lol.

I’m watching this 3 years after you posted this because I need help. I just revoked a 2.5 year old German shepherd who’s still in tact. I asked the owner before if he was good with other dogs to which they answered yes. Today, I brought him to meet my friends dog and he went absolutely feral. He broke the prong collar, tried jumping on the dog, screaming, showing his teeth, just pure aggression. He is such a good dog other than the aggression. He doesn’t bite or lunge towards people either. He’s good with humans. The only flaw he has is other dogs. I truly don’t think that he was socialized as much as the previous owner says he was. Like I said, he’s also still in tact. My first thing is wanting to do is neuter him but I know that won’t fix everything. Can you please please please help or give me any suggestions.

I need some help, my dog (Amstaff/ blue heeler) loves to go for walks but recently every single time we go out, people let their unleashed dogs run up to mine. It’s not a super big deal, except these dogs are charging and barking/growling. My dog gets along fine with other dogs but because he was attacked by 2 German shepherds in his foster home, he doesn’t like dogs in his face. The biggest threat so far is that someone just a few houses down from us has a golden doodle that lunges at my dogs face. The first time we were walking past that house, the golden doodle bit my dog on the butt, and it continued to shove his nose against my dogs face. We avoided walking that way but the dog would still charge toward us. The dogs that have run up to us are a jack russel terrier, a Pomeranian, a golden doodle, a chihuahua/ pit mix, 2 micro bullies and a German shepherd/ husky mix. All of them were actively trying to attack my dog, with the golden doodle and the shepherd/ husky being the worst. Now my dog is terrified of walks and I am too. I have tried my best to get away from the charging dogs but my 80 lbs dog won’t budge. My dog has never bit back, he is just frozen in place and shaking. Please someone help, I have no idea what to do

Holy shit your neighbourhood SUCKS. There are methods to deter off leash dogs from coming up to you (there is one on this Channel), but your neighbourhood is overkill. I dunno what Joel has to say about it, but if that were me, I'd have pepper spray with me on all walks. It's just ridiculous. I dunno what the leash laws are in your place, but if people can't train their dogs to leave other dogs alone, they're gonna have to learn it the hard way. Actions have consequences. It sucks to have to make dogs suffer, but your innocent dog doesn't deserve to be fearful of a friggin' WALK ffs.

How many dogs do you need to socialize a 5 year old Mal/Dutchy rescue. Riley (who I haven’t met yet, he is coming next week) seems from videos to be a happy sweet active dog. Scared of the hissing cat, curious about horses. I have 1 GSD cross senior female and several neighbors total have a miniature poodle, a samoyed, another GSD cross and a chihuahua. I have a friend with another chihuahua and a rottweiler who could probably come to play. Will that be enough? Do they all need to come the same day? How often should they play together?

My dog enjoys being with old or calm dogs, but she has trouble with very hype dogs. Should I try to get her used to them or just respect her boundary? I'd like for her to be able to play with high energy dogs, but the higher the energy the harder it is for me to control the situation, I don't know how to stop a rough play if they're running fast... Tips?
@dianad24853 жыл бұрын
@@ephajanke3242 she's not insecure at all, I'd say she's a bit bratty. She's high energy as well so calmer dogs don't really interest her as much as high energy dogs. Problem is, if I keep the play short (couple of seconds) it's fine, but if I stop to talk with the owner there's a high chance she'll growl or bite the dog. I think what happens is she starts a rough play but doesn't know how to stop it, so she growls, because when the dog goes away she's fine again...

My dog has met many other animals, and does very good when it’s monitored, and taken slowly. She’s a pittbull, and she’s 4 years old now. She actually was extremely good with other animals the younger she was. The more she grew up and into her full grown, she had developed an alpha mentality. She does very good around dogs who are submissive. If she were to interact with a dog that would stand up to her, it would be an immediate fight. I take her in car rides and try to get her to see other animals and normalize everything, but if she can’t go up to them, she just starts SCREAMING. I’ve use treats, I keep trying to socialize her, and do absolutely everything, atleast 2-3 days out of the week. How do I get her to not care about the other animals, get her not to scream, and to be less sharp. I don’t want to say she’s aggressive because she’s not. She just really will stand on her business, but not instigate.

I took my puppy too soon to a dog park and it was a disaster. I didn't know what to do or really even what I was walking into. It was a mistake and I wish I hadn't. I literally know no one with a decent dog to help me get him better socialization. He's an extremely hyper dog, which makes a lot of dogs like react negatively towards him. Idk I have finally given up and called a guy that runs a training business like Joel. I'm more confident training him from watching these videos, however I am not confident I can properly socialize him and I don't want to cause anymore harm. He's still young I don't want him to become aggressive 😫

A lot of trainers actually don't recommend taking dogs to dog parks at all! There are too many untrained dogs who are not under control by their (often clueless) owners. Unfortunately, this can result in dog fights and cause them to fear other dogs. It also can teach your dog to pull towards and bark at other dogs when on leash because they learn that other dogs= play time. Instead, you can have small play dates with dogs that you know and owners that understand dog body language and have taught appropriate play for their dog. Also, learn about body language and step in when your dog is being too pushy. Do this by making sure you can call your dog off of play and do some obedience training during play time so that they don't get too crazy. Also, going to a large space where you are far from other dogs (on leash) and ensuing that you can get your dog's attention and practice basic obedience or play with them in the presence of other dogs is another great way to socialize! Shows them that other dogs are good but they don't need to pull towards them. Also it teaches them to stay focused on you and listen to you even in the presence of other dogs. Once you achieve this and get consistent recall and obedience around other dogs, you COULD try slowly introducing the dog park again. Make sure you are your dog's focus outside of the park before going in. Do so at your own risk though because no matter how trained your dog is, others may not be.

I have a problem with my 2 year old mastiff female with lacking socialization with people. We live on a farm and she is fairly isolated but does do weekly training. She's ok with other dogs but with people not so well. What can I do to help socialize her more? Taking her out in public and get use to unfamiliar places, sounds, people and environments? Try to get her to understand that I'm not putting her in a place that I would let her get hurt? How to I correct bad behaviors and reward good behaviors?

I've had dog trainers that come to my house or I go to the training facility that will bring one of their dogs that is non-reactive and good with other dogs to introduce my dog to. Of course it costs money and kind of expensive to have a dog trainer but that was my only solution to do it in a safe environment.
