Learn How To Solve Inequalities

John Zimmerman, www.algebratesthelper.com explains how to solve linear inequalities. An inequality, such as --4x is less than 8, the goal is the same as when solving an equation: to get the variable by itself on one side. Note that when multiplying or dividing both sides of an inequality by a negative number, the direction of the inequality sign must be switched. For example, to solve --4x is less than 8, divide both sides by --4, to get x is greater than -2. And when graphing an inequality on a number line, less than or greater than means an open dot, and less than or equal to or greater than or equal to means a closed dot.

Do you always have to divide by 2 one you've added or subtracted the number? E.g he added 6 to get 2x

+Morgan Carey Actually the way you get the number /amount you have to divide by is by looking at the number next to your variable which in this case was 2x so you divide 2x by 2 to get the 2 alone because you want to seperate 2 and x so by doing the oppisite of what is keeping them together(multipication) you can separate them. So after that you can take the 2 that is all alone and divide it by the number that is left which in our case is 16. So after you do that you will end up with 8. So the answer to your question is no, You do not all ways divide by two. Hope this helps you :)

the less then < points to where the arrow goes from the 8, any equal is darken circle and also a bracket ] so that (- ~,8] is the notation...a left parenthesis ( is used by the infinity symbol.
