Excellent tutorial! Unlike most of the "spinning for beginner's" tutorials, you cut it down to the very essential movements needed, briefly explained why, then demonstrated several times, from different angles and distances. Bravo!

At last! I finally found out how to tie properly the guide yarn to stop it sliding. Thank you. Greetings from Australia.

It's a shame it's SO expensive getting into some fiber arts. It's a commitment for most people to purchase a loom or carder and wheel.I love yarn, and you're not alone in not knowing what to do with it. It's how we end up with great stashes. Great video 📹!

Thank you for the tutorial. I lost my dear friend recently to a rare kind of blood cancer - APML. I needed…something, so I bought a kg of merino (just what you advised against 😆)… and I’ve been trying to spin it on finger and pencil and everything. I didn’t even know what a single ply was… I thought I would spin yarn and knit, and then donate to the refugees here in Cyprus… the winters can be harsh. However, your video makes me think that I need a spinning wheel, but they are so expensive!!! I definitely can’t afford one. Well, I still have fingers… 🙂 We can’t lose hope or time, right? Thank you for the lovely video. ❤

I started spinning 6 years ago, but on spindles only. About 1 month ago, I bought my first spinning wheel, Ashford kiwi 3. It is very different spinning in the wheel than spinning with spindles. I just finished my first singles. I filled the little bobbins all the way, so I just bought the jumbo flyer with bobbins that can replace the small one. As soon as I receive it, I'll be plying. THANKS for this excellent tutorial. I'll be watching the Plying video, too.

I am a beginner at spinning....the beginner who has had trouble even getting it on the bobbin. :) I have watched MANY videos and, I have to say, this has been the best one that I have watched. I very much appreciate the simplicity of the video, in giving basic tips and not having a lot of extra fluff (music, animations, etc) in the videos. This has been soo helpful and can already acknowledge where I have messed up in a few places. Please keep making videos! You are a great teacher!

I use the first method of re-attaching mostly. I use the second method but with a very long bit tossed up into the fiber then just incorporate it into the new. I found short splices tend to come apart on the loom. The first method with wool is best for the loom. The second way you do with wool is fine if you are knitting something or using the yarn as a weft on the loom. I mostly spin flax but do some wool but my focus is thin threads for making cloth.

I usually spin from washed fleece that is combed or carded. Commercial roving is or has been pressed tightly together which causes some sticking. Dividing the roving into slivers and doing a little pre-drafting is usually helpful for consistency. I used my Ashford Traditional (single drive, scotch tension) since the early '80's and now I do a lot worsted for weaving and socks so I use my Haldane Orkney for spinning and ply on my Ashford.

New to spinning here, watched so many videos. Trying all kinds of various fibres. Finally got some on the bobbin. It’s very very twisty though, not sure what to do about that. Working on a Kiwi 3. Going to give your method a go. Wish me luck :) your teaching style is really good. Thanks so much for sharing !

@basementfibers Жыл бұрын
If your fiber is really twisty you need more take-up which means increase your tension just a bit until it has less twist. It needs to pull onto the bobbin more quickly so it gets less twist as it travels onto the bobbin. It’s hard in the beginning because you feel like it wants to rip out of your hand. Try to treadle slowly if you can. I know you’ll get it! 😁 Good luck!

This is a great video! I recently made a video about Falkland wool, and one of the surprising things I learned that Falkland is a blend of different breeds of sheep wool, which includes Corriedale. Pretty cool, huh?

Instead of using sheep's wool, is it possible to use the cat tail plant (Typhus Latifolia)? The seed pods of the cat tail plant look like brown sausages or brown tails of a pet cat. When the seed pods are cut open in December through February they expand into large soft white cotton-like piles of fluff.
@barbarahoward8657
@barbarahoward8657 Жыл бұрын
Several issues going on with your cat tail plant fiber. One, you need long fibers to make good yarns and two, you need to find out if the fiber of the plant, or animal, you're thinking of using can catch, or if it's slick. If you look at wool under the microscope you will see it is very rough, so it can catch another fiber. If your fiber is slick or very smooth, it will not spin very well. That is not to say you could not use it, you would just probably need to combine it with a longer fiber or with a rougher fiber. I have often thought that the milkweed pod fibers would be interesting to use as well. Good luck, if you get anything done it'd be interesting to see.
