Thanks so much for clarifying that sometimes the "ra" is left off from "rareru". I was watching another video where it listed the potential form of "kuru" as "koreru", but everywhere else I saw it listed as "korareru". It was driving me nuts. This is the first place I found my answer! Would be nice if the other lesson metioned this "little" detail. I mean if you're going to take it upon yourself to teach, teach right and be thorough! I really appreciate the meticulousness of your lessons!

Xiao Lung わかります means « understand » (for example, 日本語 が わかります = I understand Japanese). わかっています is the continuous form of わかる, and it means that you already know that information. It is not very polite (« you don’t need to tell me, I already know that! »). And yes, the dictionary form is the same as the casual “non-past” (present/future) form! So たべる can mean “to eat, I eat, you eat, he eats, she eats, we eat, they eat, I’ll eat, you’ll eat, he’ll eat, she’ll eat, we’ll eat, they’ll eat”!! ^^

thank you very much! :) so 'te' form plus iru or imasu makes the present countiuous, like "I am talking".
@KANJILink

Exactly! はなす = to talk, I talk, you talk, she talks... And はなしている (or more politely はなしています) = to be talking, I'm talking, you're talking, she's talking...! ^^

Trying to pronounce some of these make me sound like an idiot... i'm probably just gonna write notes to japanese people when I wanna talk to them. If you can say "wasurerareru" without sounding dumb, pat yourself on the back cuz you were made for this.

Could you tell me the difference between 'wakarimasu' and 'wakatte imasu'? I heard that the second is polite present, but in many other vids I saw the use of a simple -masu ending. Also, is the dictionary form, like taberu or nomu already a present tense?

Isn't confusing if u don't pay attention for a few seconds and you simply hear Wakaru as the normal verb instead of the Potential form since they all end with RU

すみますん。 how is 寝られる the passive form different from 寝られる the potenial form?
@KANJILink
@KANJILink 10 жыл бұрын
You're right, group 2 verbs have the same conjugation for the passive form AND the potential form! You would need the context to know which one it is. But usually, we take out the "ra" at the potential form, so you would rather have 寝られる for the passive and 寝れる for the potential. Hope this helps!^^

What is confusing me at the moment is how similar the potential and imperative forms look for group one verbs, especially as I am aware that using the imperative form is considered quite harsh/rude, so I don't want to get them mixed up! Group 2 is clearly different, e.g. taberu - potential = taberareru / imperative = tabero. That's fine. But group 1 e.g. yomu - potential = yomeru (yomemasu) / imperative = yome If you were using the imperative form, like demanding someone reads something, would this be different in that the sentence wouldn't have the ru/masu ending, and would maybe be more like xxx (w)o yome yo!
