It is unfortunate that the learning curve for Latex is steep but there is no comparison between the capabilities of Latex and that of wordpad. The tutorial is to motivate people to learn latex, it does not need to cover the advanced features.

Get Scientific Workplace Software and let it code the latex for you. I've never encountered anyone who has used both Scientific Workplace and Latex Coding by-hand who didn't agree. The most common excuse I hear for not using it is that "I like latex code", but I have NEVER heard of anyone printing out the code without LaTeXing it because they really do find the code easy to read. The other nice feature of Scientific Workplace Software is that it has a math engine that can do things like check your algebra, plot functions, ect right from your document, without need to recode your formulas into mathematica. The engine isn't fully-featured like mathematica, but it is still very handy.

The problem: not free and it's expensive.

Apart from issues that arise from opening Word documents using different versions of MS Word which can be avoided by converting a finished document to pdf, I don't see how this could be considered a better alternative, especially since it's way more complicated and requires some learning and memorization.
