If we want to be precise, "salve" really is an imperative meaning "be well/healthy!". (A imperative in the same way that telling someone to "have a good night" is ).

English does not come from Latin, but after the Norman conquest its vocabulary and structure was brutally modified. In a BBC report, the University of Oxford states the following: the English language is made up of this way: Vocabulary: 60% Latin, and only 28% Anglo-Saxon; grammar: 48% Anglo-Saxon structure, 39% Latin structure; the rest of the grammar structure comes from Celtic and Greek. For this reason philologists consider English a Hybrid, saying that English is a hybrid is the right thing to do.

What you really know about England, its culture, style, language, castles, royalty etc is Norman. The Anglo-Saxons in a single battle lost everything, I repeat, in a single battle they lost everything. Ironically, the word England comes from the ancient Anglo-Saxon meaning "land of the Angles", but the "land of the Angles" remained in the hands of the Normans until today. By the way the (modern) English language does not come from Anglo-Saxon, the modern English language comes from Anglo-Norman which is considered the fifth variant of the Norman language (a Romance language). This explains the colossal influence that Latin has on English, for this reason philologists consider English a hybrid language and not a purely Germanic language.

Salve. Sounds like "save" are we greeting each other ny telling each other we are saved? Or also salve. Like an ointment for pain. Are we to comfort each other when we greet each other? Do we? Or do we get mad and angry? I like sallam. as muslims say. And like hebrews say. And Peace like i was taught Jesus said. And Salve Maria too.

according to a report by the bbc in London The English language: 1- It uses and depends on the Roman alphabet (in my opinion this is a fundamental reason for being a hybrid language). 2-His vocabulary is 60% Latin. 3- Its grammar is 38% Latin (denying the legend that its grammar is 100% Germanic). Other sources state that it is 39% Latin. Therefore, it is philologically impossible to consider the English language as a Germanic language. English is really a hybrid.
@jackdarby2168
@jackdarby2168 Жыл бұрын
Is that how language family is decided? Only the thrid point is substantial( alphabet nor vocabulary do not matter). What does Germanic mean? What does hybrid mean? What is the status of Middle and Old English, etc.? Other points have to be addressed before stating English is discounted as a Germanic language

It’s impossible to consider it this? It maybe misguided, erroneous or accurate, but it’s not impossible. Linguists of solid reputation and deep expertise have done what you say is impossible. And all one needs to do to appreciate the Germanic underpinnings of English is to study German, Middle English or, especially, Dutch. Oh and these irrefutably Germanic tongues also employ the Latin alphabet. Where you get the idea that mere use of that alphabet determines a language’s inclusion in the Romance languages is apt to be a place no linguists dwell and your making that contention destroys your amateur linguistic chops. The Latin sourced language components were overlayed on an existing Germanic tongue. It’s like no other language in its blending of the Romance with the Germanic, I’ll give you that. That’s what makes it one of the greatest languages, spelling issues notwithstanding.
