I recently purchased a Pipa from China. The problem is that the string height is really high. I am knowledgeable in playing a basic 6 string guitar. The strings rest fairly close to the frets. However, on the Pipa, the strings are very high. 7-8mm above the frets on the upper bamboo frets on the body. So, pressing the string to the fret to play a note takes a lot of pressing down to reach the frets. Moving from the bottom A string to the D string makes that transition rather difficult. I was wondering if that string height was normal for the Pipa.

I am left handed. Would I switch the plucking to my left hand and pressing on the bridge to my right hand? Or keep the plucking with my right hand?

Hi Hailey. If you had past music lessons on other instruments where you are used to pressing with the right hand and plucking with the left, then you will have to switch the strings around and do it opposite way. If you are learning from scratch, I would suggest you try the standard way.

Pipa can be played in all keys! It just prefers D major just like how Piano is the easiest at C major.
