For me, this program has some DAW capabilities, but the main diference from Trackers, is that you make sequences on the go, with a tight preset grid in the face. Trackers can't edit full channel waveforms in a detailed way (drawing for example), but it has the sample editor to edit instruments waveforms. In my opinion, Renoise is great for sequencing tracks with your own, sefl-made loops.

Great tutorial series! Been looking for a program that offers full DAW functionality in tracker format, and this completely fits my needs. Tried to get into more "conventional" DAWs like FL or Ableton but I could never really wrap my head around them, primarily because picking apart music files from games like Unreal Tournament in OpenMPT as a 14-year-old kid way back then was my first experience in creating music and I stuck with that for years, haha. Even now I think there's something appreciable about composing with trackers the old-school way. It's very quick, snappy and the interface densely covers a lot of song information so I'm glad to see you cover this.

I think in the case of tracker daws you may want to start with a simpler (and more restricted) program like famitracker or milkytracker

I've never used a tracker and I'm no computer wiz kid. So, when I installed the demo this weekend I was expecting to struggle mightily. How pleasantly surprised I was! I simply followed the quickstart guide and was making fun tunes in minutes. Give it a try, it's a damn sexy piece of software that will give you a fresh take on arranging and composing music. It's a lot of fun too.

Awesome, I've been looking forward to this series! Question: I have the renoise demo, but are there any free trackers you would recommend for the time being? I'm not sure how much the demo restrictions will be a factor while I follow the series.

Milky tracker, but it lacks a lot of features Renoise has. I haven't seen any other tracker program that has as much as renoise.
I got a Polyend Tracker yesterday and now I want to see what this DAW can do. It’s really changed the way I think about music production.
@brainbox9219 Жыл бұрын
I have one as well and it works great for this, you can export to .it and transport that into renoise, finish working on whatever I had saved in the tracker, game changer

I started with OpenMPT and switched to Renoise. Quite smooth trangression but I don't recommend starting with OpenMT, the quality is much worse (or my samples were xD)

Thanks for sharing. I've been using FL Studio for years, but am new to trackers, even though a lot of my formative years happened during the time of Amigas and 90's PC trackers. Back then, I was fumbling around with Cakewalk MIDI editor and there wasn't as much info out there how to do things, but trackers feel more organic, with a more pedal to metal feel. I'm also a programmer, so entering data via keyboard in a grid seems very intuitive to me. I've been playing with OpenMPT for the last several days, but yes, I have noticed that some of the modules out there have 8-bit mono samples. They sound really good for 8-bit mono samples, but they just cannot compete with the samples of today.

I am also a FL Studio user but decided to learn a second DAW and the choice fell on Renoise. I think that you should not limit yourself to one DAW and mastering a program such as Renoise or other trackers makes you approach composing songs in a different way and you can become more creative. You can always transfer some learned patterns from one DAW to another.
@ivanl.82012 жыл бұрын
@@hinsen Same here. I've been an FL Studio user for years, and have gotten Renoise just last week. I was also looking for a way to spark my creativity by using a completely different tool, and I also place very high value on adaptability and flexibility and often prefer to combine approaches in everything I do in life (not just music) rather than following the either/or approach. I'm very much a self-taught improvisational keyboard player who's very rarely been disciplined to use metronomes/click track/beats etc. Playing in bands never interested me, although it would be cool to find one more person to collaborate with. I am kind of hoping I can use Renoise to make some sequenced arpeggiated track parts that I can use instead of regular beats and can sort of build some cool instrumental backbones that I can then import into FL Studio and layer some of my melody lines over. It's really awesome to find others who also think around these lines, because there's just too much competition about which DAW is better, and I am not terribly interested in those types of debates. I'd rather use a bit of everything as means to an end, so I can successfully materialize all these ideas in my head.

I've got a Question about the Plugin thing. In what case can you work with audio - when you load a plugin and sample that? Does Anybody understand?
@ComposingGloves6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your question, but I think your asking when to use audio vs a plug-in? Or the sampled version of that plug? Basically Renoise has the ability to playback samples very efficiently, so if you plan to use those abilities then go with audio. You can sample a synth patch and then use its sampled version to take advantage of these abilities. Otherwise its better to stick with midi if you plan to use the synth's engine.
