Русь пришла из Новгорода в Киев в 882 г. А до этого она была в Новгороде в 750-х - 880 гг :)). И первая династия России Рюриковичи стала править именно в Новгороде в 862 г. В Новгороде как раз в 1862 г. был открыт памятник Тысячелетию России. Династия Рюриковичей правила 862 - 1598 гг. После Смутного времени её сменилы Романовы 1613-1917

@@howjaneylearned An example could be various quotes from Marmeladov in the tavern scene, which played quite the role in presenting some of the themes of the book. To be quite honest, there are a ton of parts that you could pick apart, if you feel like doing more! Other pieces of dostoyevsky, such as "dream of a ridiculous man" or "white nights" are also interesting, and blew my mind.

This is awesome! My interest in Russian started with War and Peace in English as a precursor to Russian history that evolved into the language and other classic works. Master and Margarita is my dream to read someday. I listen to the audio book and watch the series on KZbin in Russian over a over again. Idiot is also a favorite. I don't believe it's a universal truth, but his suffering has certainly enriched many lives.

See! Russians are so in disbelief that there are so many people all throughout the world that are so drawn to Russian culture. And so many of us became obsessed THANKS TO Russian literature. It is truly exquisite and there is nothing like it. It possesses a rich and humble approach to the human condition that you don't see elsewhere. Did you watch the Russian television adaptation of Idiot? I believe it's available on Amazon Prime. The actor that plays Myshkin is excellent.

@@howjaneylearned I'm not a "prime" member on Amazon. I did look for it anyway... no luck. I purchased the 4 dvd set of a 2003 version from director Vladimir Bortko. I have watched the older Mosfilm version on KZbin several times. I even purchased that dvd hoping the dvd version might have the entire book (it doesn't). I have never found a complete film past the "party" where she decides on who she will marry. There are a lot of resources available on KZbin. I listen to the Master & Margarita audio book over and over. The clarity of the reading allows me to pick out words and "guess" what's going on. I watch the series on KZbin as well. My favorite movie to watch is kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqPcpnWaeLpsmJI. I'm a beginner, but I love listening to the Russian language. I think I can almost meditate to a well done audio book while I'm walking. I love your channel! Thank you for all the effort you put into it. Hopefully I will have my dvd set soon. I'm dying to see the entire story.

Love it tons. I happened to read Ayn Rand's Fountainhead and then somehow I found Dostoyevsky from searching for Ayn Rand somewhere. Got crime and punishment in english and loved it so much. Then read The Brothers Karamazov and started War and Peace. War and peace sits on a shelf of half finished books waiting for winter to float around on the breeze, bringing the perfect spirit with which to finish such a beast of a book. I wonder if any Russians have read Ayn Rand; the anti-Russia Russian.

Janie, love your lessons, and am constantly in awe of your near flawless accent. Quick question: How would you rate the complexity of Tolstoy's Russian, as compared to, say, Dostoevsky's? Reason I ask is my main goal in learning Russian is to someday tackle War and Peace. Having read it 5 or 6 times in English, I'm determined to read it in the original.
@howjaneylearned
@howjaneylearned Жыл бұрын
In my experience, Dostoevsky's sentence structure is more complex than Tolstoy's. What's hard for me is how much detail Tolstoy going into about military uniforms, etc. There are so many words that are no longer relevant in the 21st century, so much so that when I look up their meaning in English, I don't even know what the English word is. Lastly, Tolstoy uses a lot of French! So I hope you know some French too. Good luck!

I’m a little surprised, or maybe just confused. You say that reading Dostoevskii in Russian (not to mention bad translations) is difficult, so I presumed this video would be aimed a little higher. Yet the first discussion, of a grammatically fairly straightforward sentence, goes into basic grammar that should be known even by a first-year student. I guess I had misunderstood the purpose of the video.

I think even the main characters name has some literary significance because if you drop the nikov is means schism or split. He comes together in the end, coming to terms with what he did and accepting his punishment. A country as an entity does not operate within the same moral constraints as an individual man. Im not so sure an evil country ever existed. Although my Grandparents fully believe Russia is terribly evil.... Look at the brain washing (aka culture) from the cold war era - on both sides - where alot of the older Russians and Americans seem to think the other side has an evil running deep through the marrow of the people, land and country itself.
