Randomly came upon this video while looking up some pronunciation hints for a completely different language and now I'm sitting here at 4 am, studying how my tongue moves while doing "rrrr" noises. It's a fascinating thing, just like watching someone trying to explain it to English speakers is. And the best part? I have no trouble with rolling Rs, since my native language has them as well :D

Surprised I have another response from this as I posted my comment a year ago. If it helps it was definitely a combination of both when I was learning to trill. Videos helped me a lot but I think as long as you want to do it and practise enough you will eventually be able to do - trill. For me personally I remember I managed to pull it off once, then managed a few times and just persevered until I was able to do it. Again though if I really think about how to Trill i can totally muck it up. It’s very much a natural sound with not much effort on what your doing with trying to make the sound. If that Makes sence? Lol Keep practising and failing a LOT would be my advice tho,

(I’m American) It clicked for me more when I realized, that you have to open your mouth much more than when you’re speaking English. Now I just need to practice!! Thank you!!!

Thank you so much ! I've always been able to make the trilled R sound in isolation, but have always struggled to use it in words or sentences because I couldn't make it flow with other letter sounds. This video has made me realise that I've been making the sound with my tongue in the wrong position; I've been doing it with my tongue pulled way back into the middle of my mouth, nowhere near my teeth. Which meant moving my tongue quite a lot when transitiong from R to any other sound, which is why I've been unable to make it flow. Now I know what I need to work on. Thanks again.

Yeah thats the problem with saying "Say it like the P in apple", cause every country says it a bit different. Irish dont do a dental fricitive for th for example, but would make a strong T sound in bottle and not a dd sound. However she does explain in a way an american english speaker could understand. For UK/Irish people it would probably be better to diagram it, as they are exposed to the French thrill, the spannish one, italian and even germany and often they cant tell the difference. French and german ones made at back of throat. Also some accents in English actually thrill the R already, some northern/scottish accents etc, also all the english accent villains in star wars roll their r.

For example, if you say: "Voy manejando el caro", only an idiot would think tha you´re speaking about some expensive thing. Relax, the R and Rrrr is not important as many think. In countris such Bolivia, Ecuador and Perú, the hard R is not used.

This a good video. As good as the instructions themselves are, it's also a huge help to learn that this requires practice and isn't something that comes right away. My question is: Is it normal for a beginner to get a kind of airy sound? I'm getting okay tongue vibration (if I force a little more air out than I normally do when talking), but I also get the sort of "leaky air hose" sort of sound with it. It kind of sounds more like a rolling "th" than a rolling "r".
@EasySpanishnow7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is totally normal and that is a great indicator that you are getting closer to the fully rolled "r" . You can also try to pull the tongue in a tiny little bit . This can help with the airy sound.

4:06 This is imprecise. The tongue postion for the strong "r" sound is NOT like the English "th" sound. The tongue should be positioned just behind the alveolar ridge and curled back pointing up towards the roof of your mouth. Then when you blow with the right intensity you tongue will oscillate against the alveolar ridge. (If you lick from the back of your front teeth to the back of your mouth you will feel a bump. That bump is the alveolar ridge. ) Also your lips should be open like when you make the English "ee" sounds.
@GRGFT2 жыл бұрын
there are a lot of spanish native speakers that never learnt how to pronounce the "rr" my respect for those non native speakers that made it.
