Mother's Day 2020 is this weekend! Want to make a heartfelt, homemade gift for the best Mom in the world? In our third episode of Nā Pāka ma ka Hale (Parks at Home), brought to your by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation, Shannon from Pu‘unui Community Park shows you how to do an arts & crafts projects from home with materials that you hopefully have lying around the house. It’s called “Tape Painting” and anyone can do it!
For Tape Painting, you will be needing paper (preferably something that is a bit thicker so that the paint doesn’t seep through), some paint (we use acrylic paint, however you can use whatever you have at home like tempera or watercolor), and blue painter’s tape (or you can use masking tape).
The first thing that we are going to do is peel off small pieces of tape to spell out the word that we are going to write. For Mother’s day we are going to do is “MOM”.
A useful trick with the tape that you are using is to put it on your skin or any other surface and peel it off before applying it to your paper. What this does is it makes the back less tacky or less sticky so that when you remove it from your paper it doesn’t rip the paper. For the blue painter’s tape you want to do this at least once. If you are using this masking tape, I would do it several times just because this is tackier and much stronger than the painter’s tape that is meant to be removed.
Next, place each piece as of tape on your paper to spell out your word, or you can do them all at once.
Once you’re happy with what you have you can start painting. When you’re painting, be sure to cover as much of the white paper as possible. You also want to make sure to get paint as close as you can to the tape.
Once the paint is dry, you can begin to remove the tape. Make sure you do it slowly so you don’t rip the paper.
With all of the tape removed you can see that “MOM” is still the color of the paper. You can use that space to write mom a little note, you can decorate it, you can outline it, or you can sign your name like I’ve done. I hope you’ve all enjoyed this project. Thank you for watching and stay healthy! Make sure to subscribe to this feed to catch the latest episodes of Nā Pāka ma ka Hale posted every week!
