Thank you for your question. The significance of tapping the edge of a cup or calabash three (3) times before pouring is due to the power and representation of the number. It is said to represent the human being (Body, Soul and Spirit) as well as the human family (Mother, Father and Child). In Akan culture, it is said to represent the Earth, the sky (heavens) and the underworld. It also represents the course of a day (morning, noon and night), and is a measurement of our existence (past, present and future). Therefore, we recognize it depending on the situation. It is expressed numerous ways throughout human activities, not only libation. The number three (3) is said to be a number of perfection and it is important in many Afrikan cultures.
