Omg this is tougher than chinese. I'm planning to date a hmong guy from Laos. But i think im gonna stick to Thai when talking to him, huhu. Thanks for the lessons
@Tswv863SarahGore3 жыл бұрын
Haha. You can do it! It's intimidating at first, but really not so hard. Just learn in bite sized pieces, and don't give up. I gave up when I first started learning, it's true! But after a while the whole process really came together. :)

For a foreigner --- an ESL of the Hmong language, which is very tonal, with 8 tones, as you've demonstrated 4 here ---- your ability to shift the tones was quite good. Unfortunately, most Hmong these days are literally not educated (or not concerned) enough to speak and/or to write with the appropriate tonal grammar. I am horrified, for example, when I see on a daily basis Hmong writing "Kuv niam NKAWD" as "Kuv niam NKAWV." "Tod and "Tov" makes no difference for Hmong these days.... They would, for example, say "Nqa qhov mis TOD coj los TOV rau khob dej no rau tus menyuam haus" ... as .... "Nqa qhov mis TOV coj los TOV rau khob dej no rau tus menyuam haus" ... and NOT BE BOTHERED at all by the fact that the second sentence (the one they choose) MAKES NO SENSE... TOD and TOV, as you know, have totally different meanings and tones. But, again, Hmong these days don't really care.... about the differences... No one teaches Hmong to them formally; there are no grammarians in Hmong or in Hmong schools... so everyone speaks as nws wants and, so, the language is both dying AND deteriorating at the same time, before our very eyes... In any case... you seem pretty gifted in linguistics so perhaps you know this or, perhaps, you don't.... but Thai and Lao, for example, are the only two major languages I know that have completely done away with the word DRINK. Today, in both Lao and Thai, it's EAT: I want to EAT some eater. I want to EAT some rice. They have dropped the word DEUM (drink). And native speakers of neither Lao nor Thai blink an eye about that odd linguistic deletion. As far as I know, all other major languages have --- "still" employ ---- different terms for the word DRINK (for liquids) and the word EAT (for solid foods). French, English, German, Norwegian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Koreans, Bantu, Swahili, Italian, etc..... that I could search in Google .... all deploy different words for EATING and DRINKING, except, again, Lao and Thai..... The good thing about linguistics is that THEY EVOLVE, true. But it is never easy, within one's own lifetime, to be a witness to the slow deterioration of a language.... from tone to word deletions...

@kiabtoomlauj6249 Written RPA Hmong had never been taught nor revised formally on intellectual levels and standards since its inception 1960s. More importantly no one meaning native and non-native scholars or linguists bothered nor had a clue to further improve upon the writing system like the application meaning and use of D and V among others. The most offensive and idiotic implementation by supposedly educated Western Hmong is the advent of BL in place of NPL and B in place of NP and J for NTS etc etc. This nonsense is a travesty not only Written Hmong but spoken and literary comprehensive knowledge as well. Given the mere fact that the next generation of Western Hmong are basically nincompoops when it comes to written and spoken Hmong it is basically pointless to improve upon the RPA writing system. When I taught RPA Hmong with some of these revisions and/or improvements most Hmong did not even comprehend the insight and corrections. They told me I was not teaching correct Hmong *lolz*
