- Too wordy - 50-60 chars per line - stick to 2-3 fonts max - Not choosing the right colors - Lack of Negative space - Place elements arbitrarily - Failure to create contrast - Not scaling properly - Inappropriate font combinations - inadequate space between lines - Using raster images - trying to achieve perfect symmetry - Failing to communicate effectively - Not being consistent

Another item overlooked sometimes is that you may need to print out your design. For me, our printers are just black-white laser printers so be mindful about your audience members printing the design when choosing fonts and colors. Also, we have several folks that are color blind in our office, so you need to take that into consideration too when using color as a differentiator within the story you are trying to tell.

Personally I think the modern web design, though it might look visually appealing the general usefulness is usually very crappy. The web is now full of sites that look good but do nothing. It's the novelty of a big full screen photo home page with nothing but a title and maybe a down arrow button. Then there is a two column alternating image on one side and meaningless text on the other, this continues boringly down to the footer which has about 50 pointless meaningless links. Then there are the mobile websites which are scaled down even further, yes they are responsive but it came at the cost of being useless. I hope trends change and websites start to both look nice and be useful at the same time. Sorry for my rant but the lack of imagination gets to me sometimes.

I think all the points are valid yet, paradoxically, many of the ugly examples of 'bad' design are more eye catching than the polished 'professional designer' text. I think it's all a matter of scale. If you're selling eggs from your porch then a catchy hand painted sign is probably better than a professionally made one that's suitable for a corporation, such as Google.

I'm in my dotage, having worked as a graphic designer in the late 1960s. The most striking thing about this very sensible collections of mistakes is that it could have been produced in those days. It's remarkable. There are some eternal truths. One point; leading is pronounced leding. Line spacing used to be done by lead strip. Nice video.
@alfredttarski45214 жыл бұрын
6:13 The term "leading" is pronounced *ledding.* When texts were still printed with metal type, compositors would increase line spacing by adding additional strips of lead between lines of texts.

Nice video and good points! I notice i'm not scaling the text enough (maybe my program doesn't make it fun, quick, or smooth enough, maybe excuses) but i'm getting better at it. Also, i haven't thought that the image could drive the selection / mood of the font. Maybe it's something i've been doing already, but now i can do it more consciously. Been struggling with text over contrasty images, but lately i've come to the realization that the images often needs to be muted (or changed), or use the forementioned color overlay. Good stuff! Often simplicity is the key. I rather use more time on simplifying the text and nailing the point, rather than playing around with fonts and colors trying to compensate. Less fonts and better harmony between the few fonts chosen (2-3) is the key. Even sometimes using nothing but the same font, but varying the font size noticeably can bring the goods. Capitalize some of the text, keep the rest normal. Bold and italic where appropriate takes one far enough. All the rest is just some nice extra, but are they essential or aiding?

Nice video, but the line spacing (leading) is not pronounced the same as in 'leading the the way forward', but like 'leding'. The word 'leading' originates from the strips of lead hand-typesetters used to use to space out lines of text evenly. The word leading has stuck, but essentially it's a typographer's term for line spacing. Lead as in the metal, not lead as in 'leading a team' etc.

Design mistakes from paid designers who should know better: Basic color theory on contrast in color (hue), saturation, and contrast. -- It is a very bad idea to put two light colors together. Too little contrast makes things unreadable. White text with yellow to gold to orange to red backgrounds, or the other way around? Too thin type? You are going to lose customers who can't read that, sometimes even if it is large or bold. The same with too little contrast if it's too dark. Try to have extra contrast for more impact. This doesn't only affect people with bad eyesight or color-vision problems. It affects all users. If you want to annoy or turn off people, or just make them take a few seconds too long having trouble reading even a title, a brand name or flavor, etc., then you are going to risk losing customers. Take a trip through the grocery store and see how things are mishandled in color usage. Or any product design. Very common mistake these days.

Learn the Most Common Video Mistakes by Non Videographers: 1. When using a green screen, step far enough away from it that you do not cast a shadow 2. When using a green screen, film with a very fast shutter speed; you can introduce motion blur in post if it feels right, but having it already there makes green keying very difficult 3. Don't use your camera's built-in microphone if you can help it 4. Don't boost your audio so much that it clips 5. Cut off the beginning of your clip; don't leave so much space where you're not talking yet 6. Look out for weird cuts like in 0:23 7. It's okay to do a quick fade out or swipe left to get rid of your visuals; you don't need to do a jarring jump cut every time. This looks especially weird when there is not a cut in your real footage, so avoid it when you can. 8. If there is motion blur in your footage, put some motion blur on your moving graphics as well 9. Avoid filming with distracting elements (e.g. holding a laser pointer the entire time and not doing anything with it) If you need to do a jump cut with your footage and your visuals, do them at the same time; don't space them apart like at 3:46 10. If your jump cut isn't a huge movement, there are transitions in some video softwares to hide them (Morph Cut in Premiere Pro, Smooth Cut in Resolve), and you should definitely do this if possible because jump cuts with small but noticeable movements can look very displeasing 11. At 5:32, don't say things like "Just a few more to go" because it's completely irrelevant to the topic and distracts the viewer 12. At 5:32, it's even worse to say things like "Just a few more to go" because it encourages the viewer to feel bored and realise how long they've been watching 13. At 5:32, it's STILL WORSE to say things like "Just a few more to go" because you're only about halfway through the video and that makes the viewer think you're trying to mislead them 14. Leave a tiny bit more space between your last line and the end of the video; it ends very abruptly 15. I don't have a fifteenth one for you. Which is sad, because I really wanted to roast you in the exact format of the video.

But i'm of the view that in the designers world nothing is a thumb rule actually, it is clients choice at the end which matters, if client want more or less colors you have to add/remove those, if he/she wants more or less text then you have to follow so in the designing or graphic world it's all about clients choice.
