Values are important to your drawing because they add depth and dimension. Edges are also important because they can help define your focal area and they also keep the viewer's eye moving throughout the drawing or scene. Both values and edges share a relationship and are usually determined by the contrast of certain areas of your scene or in this case, a portrait. Shading allows you to create softer edges, which in turn allow you to achieve more realistic renderings of noses, mouths, eyes, eyebrows, portraits, cats, and other animals.

Wow, I can't believe you sketched that portrait of yourself in 15 minutes.....absolutely brilliant Brandon!!! So, I'm assuming that when you say "values" that it refers to "shading"? I'd like to see a video on how to figure out where shading goes on a focal point (focal point could be anything. Oh, and Brandon, I feel very privileged that a true artist is giving us his valuable time to help out beginners. Not only are you giving us invaluable lessons on how to draw, but your encouragement is overwhelming to me. You make me feel like I can do it and no one has ever been able to do that for me before. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Brandon!

I realize these are older videos, but I am just getting started. That drawing is amazing and it just makes it even more so knowing you did it in 15 minutes! You have taught me a lot so far, I am looking forward to learning a lot more from you. I am interested in learning anything outdoors, animals, scenery, (no buildings), nature, things like that. I started a photography class years ago, however the instructor was inappropriate and I quit, did manage to get a photo published in a book by the National Library of Photography though. Anyway, I would have gone to school for this, however, don't trust instructors in person anymore. Thanks for all you do, Mr. Schaefer!

Brandon, I am over 55 and learning to draw from your videos, they are great! I never thought I would be able to draw a hand and I drew mine. It turned out much better than I thought, even was asked if I took classes. I said nope just online. Is drawing harder or different for left handed people like myself? Keep up the good work

Brandon these videos are great. I’m a soft pastel artist that have never gotten any lessons or guidance. I’ve never even kept a sketch book, but recently decided to just start drawing and leave the pastels for a little a bit and really focus on drawing which I’ve never done. Anyways, this video just made me realize that the reason why the few paintings I’ve made with soft pastels all look cartoonish is because I paint with too much hard edges. Thank you.

However, I much prefer the look of hand drawn sketched designs and therein lies the problem, my drawing skills. I'm really drawn to your style teaching sketching, you give very clear and practical advice. If you could do something along those lines of landscape drawing I would really appreciate it. Either way, love the tutorials, keep up the good work.

Awesome explanations. I am very new to drawing, not sure what I am going to focus on yet....I would love to draw a picture of my meeting with Jesus when I see him one day. I want to draw what others envision their meeting with him to be for them. I am going to title the series of drawings "Meeting Jesus". Thanks again Brandon, you give excellent instructions.

I really enjoy this series. I would like to watercolor paint cityscapes with people - I have to be able to draw the scenes first. Thanks for the help.

I am interested in all of the above... but I truly love urbanscapes... a scene of people walking in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the background - or a coastal Mediterranean town - with boats and people and coastal homes... i love old warship seascapes that I would love to tackle, as well as portraits... I would love to paint portraits of my family, and famous people, etc...

I’m most interested in drawing animals like cats and dogs, portraits of peoples faces and I’d also love to draw landscapes like the trees in the fall. One thing I struggle with are eyes. One day I’d love to learn to paint but sketching is my fave! Thanks!

very good video's - Im interested in landscape drawings - also, do you have other videos where you draw something beginning to end? You're a very good teacher, would love to see more. Thanks for putting your time into teaching.

Hey man, since you asked. I want to draw scenarios that I come up with. So for that, mainly, I have trouble drawing people in different poses. Faces in profile too. Now, I realize there are a ton of videos already on these subjects but they rarely explain things in a way that I can understand. I have a hard time getting both eyes to match. And body proportions. I realize that it'd take quite a few videos to cover all of this but I'll take whatever help you're willing to offer. Thanks in advance.
