I appreciate the way to make things easier for us and teach us the most simple way to draw a draw a complex looking sketch. But in the end, it's the effort from our sides that matters.

Bro your sketch is exactly the same as mine but your drawing comes out much better than mine hahaha 😅😅

Have you ever tried steeply shaving the sides of your pencil down, exposing a long part of the graphite, like the way classically trained artists often do? I suck at drawing- trying to improve- but even for me, I tried it for the first time a while back & it made for such a radically different & far better drawing experience, I was blown away. The main reason it’s done is because, when you can tilt your pencil even closer to the paper & skim it even more lightly, you can get even finer gradations & lighter values than with a normal pencil- & it really works. It’s crazy. But I find that it also helps it to feel more natural for me to hold my pencil in a way where I can comfortably make bigger, sweeping curve motions that bring my whole arm into it, which leads to much freer, more expressive, smoother curves & lines- a level of motion & accuracy & confidence that I really could never achieve with a normal pencil or a mechanical pencil (which had me prone to holding it like I was writing, & making very careful, small marks, & which prevented me from having light valued gradations in my shading at all). Anyway, if it was that big a difference for me, when I have little drawing experience/talent, then I am curious what it might do for you, if you haven’t tried it! The only downside I can see is that it’s more important to be careful with your pencil after you shave it down, because it is easy to break a long one (keep them in a cup/pencil holder when not in use & don’t drop them!), & I haven’t tried it with very soft graphite- it works well up to a 2B at least, & with harder graphite you can obviously go even lighter with the gradation, but you want it to be soft enough that you don’t have to press hard to make a visible mark, since when the exposed part is very long you could press down too hard & snap it off (2B & HB have worked perfectly fine)- so maybe have a second, normal pencil on hand for any very dark, fine outlines you want to make… But it’s awesome. It’s made me excited to draw instead of the sketch part of a painting feeling like a chore for the first time in ages. I also kind of like the extra bit of force you have to apply to get a very visible line when holding a shaved pencil lightly, properly. It makes it feel much more effortless to quickly do a series of test marks that barely show up, & then when I have the positioning just right, the slightest bit more pressure sets it down clearly. Which goes along with the freedom of motion that it gives my arm, because I can use that kind of energy & smooth motion on each guide line in quick succession until I settle on a shape/placement. It’s like 15% more maintenance than sharpening normally (I wonder if they make sharpeners which sharpen them that way automatically, come to think of it, but I just carefully whittle it down with a sharp knife [obviously always exercise good knife safety protocol/discipline if you do- cut in a direction away from yourself & others, tuck your fingers in as you do, etc.]. Also, since you’re a big drawer, you probably already know of at least one of these, but just in case you don’t, because I find them both amazing & would be curious to see what you’d make with one of them in particular), check out these very reasonably priced art supplies relevant to your medium. I love both: - I’m assuming if you watch videos about drawing then you’re probably well aware of the Tombow Mono Zero & other similar ultra-fine erasers. But they’re useful enough that I thought it was worth mentioning just in case you aren’t. For those not familiar, it’s just a very good elastomer eraser. The eraser part is basically like any normal, good eraser. And sure, for average eraser jobs, a kneaded eraser is probably easily the best option (especially since it doesn’t leave eraser poops all over your paper). However, the whole point of erasers like the Tombow Mono Zero is that they’re shaped (& retractable) like a mechanical pencil or something similar; mine is 2.3mm. So you can get into tiny gaps/corners for ultra-precise jobs where, with any normal eraser, you’d have to just wipe out a whole big area & redraw everything because they aren’t small/pointed enough. Like a mechanical pencil, you buy one with the body casing, & then you can buy eraser refills for it, but I’ve had mine a long time now & still haven’t used up the first one (for bigger jobs I’ll use a bigger eraser, but it’s my go-to favorite for smaller detailed erasing jobs & getting precisely along curves or into crevices). It’s also nice for precise erasing to create highlights in a dark shaded area, though that takes practice. - This one I think is a bit more obscure, but I’ve been evangelizing for it ever since I discovered it (thanks to some female artist’s video about sketchbook/mixed media materials- I wish I remembered her name for credit- great video). That is: the Stabilo All pencil. I think they come in a variety of colors- I have only experienced the classic black one… But it’s rad. The Stabilo All has two main distinguishing features. 1. It can write on basically any surface, hence the “all”… Plastic, glass, metal, encaustic, canvas, acrylic… It can handle them all quite effortlessly. The only material I’ve tried writing on with it which it struggled with was the weird super slippery coating on these disposable tear-away palettes for acrylic… But even with that, with a bit more pressure & repetition it made clear marks. Not as permanent on something like that, but I was impressed. Anyway, aside from the unique uses it can have as a dry-medium drawing tool that can write smoothly on all these unusual surfaces (marking things temporarily or doing full-on graphite-style drawing within a mixed media piece where it would otherwise be impossible), but it’s also water soluble graphite, so it has a whole other wet media usage! With the black, when you apply water it activates readily, & looks DARK, though you can also dilute & graduate it in the same ways you would any watercolor for a range of beautiful, deep graphite greys. And mixing it with actual watercolors is one of my favorite techniques. If you’ve ever seen the Kurotake watercolor sets with graphite colors, or colors meant to simulate sumi-e ink, it looks similar, but you can graphite-ify any of your watercolors. Or you can sand some water soluble graphite off & brush apply it like charcoal or normal graphite powder, then wet parts of it for water effects… For a tool that only costs a few dollars per pencil, & I’m still not even 30% of the way through my first one, it really is a uniquely versatile option; I think for someone who draws so much & so well, & uses watercolors to color your work, it could be a good way to tie your drawing & your watercolor together. Definitely not an easy one to master (I’m still figuring out the best ways I can use it), but they’re crazy. Using both normal graphite (or 100% water-proof ink) & one of these, so that you can make lines the water won’t activate in combination with the water soluble Stabilo All can open up a lot of options as well. Just remember not to use washes to activate the Stabilo marks before you do a wash with watercolor without thinking, since obviously it’ll reactivate again. But dragging wet watercolor through a Stabilo mark can make a cool effect. I will say, I have not shaved the sides of my Stabilo All, because as reasonably priced as they are, I’m not trying to waste 1/4 of a $4 pencil every time I drop it. 😆 But, even doing a lot of silly experiments, swatches, & wet media doodles, it’s lasting a while. No complaints; that Tombow eraser can be a little wobbly at 2.3mm… But I have no criticism for the Stabilo All. It’s really good for what it is.
