In this video I show you how to work the Travelling Loop.

This is such a great explanation. I've gotten a bit confused watching others do it but this by far is the way. I don't like magic loops, my tension gets all wonky. Thank you for sharing this :)

Me too, i am a beginner and my magic loop always has at least one thread that is way too loose and will become a hole :)

What I've been doing is moving the loop when it's reached the end of the left needle. So with a bunch of stitches still left, I pinch the cable near the end of the right hand needle and pull it through. This way, the stitches travel to the left needle's side and you dont get that 'first stitch' where you have to mind the tension. I'm not sure of it's an actual technique with it's own name, but it's been working great for me! 😊

I’m a relatively new knitter and I did that (moved the loop around when I had several stitches left) because I just didn’t have the skills to do Magic Loop the “right” way. Moving the loop around felt like a crutch but it worked great. I recently felt I had enough knitting under my belt to do Magic Loop the “right” way, but it’s not a keeper for me - I get better results (with less swearing) when I just move the loop around!

Finally I can knit with the travelling loop. Just couldn’t get my head round it watching other videos, don’t get me started on the magic loop 😊.. I watched your video twice… et voila it worked. Thank you so much, brilliantly explained!

I’ve watched people using Magic Loop and it always looks such a fiddle. This makes much more sense, and very well explained. I’m definitely going to give his a try. 👍

This is genius and exactly what I need for child size sleeves on my current project. I bought a shorter needle that still isn’t quite short enough. I’ll go back to the longer one and do this, thank you!

This is a technique I figured out and use myself, but I did not know it had a name or anything like that. Sometimes with magic loop I like NOT having to divide the stitches to work the magic loop method around. Especially if I'm working row after row of stockinette, such as working the body of a sweater top-down. What I do is just pull out the cord I will be knitting with as far as I can, which will scrunch up all the stitches on the other end of the cord. Then I just start knitting around. If the stitches kind of space out on the cord as I work, all I have to do is grab the cord to scrunch up the stitches again and continue on. There's less fiddling this way, than if you do the traditional magic loop method of working half the stitches at a time and so on.

It's a great alternative Shirley. Sometimes very small circumferences still require magic but I work the travelling loop until I need to switch. So much less mucking around. Let me know what you think when you try it out xx

Thank you very much for this video. This really helped. I was trying to figure out how to use a cable that was too long for my work. As a beginner I didn’t know what to do other than buying the right size for my project. It was the only size I had. This method will help me finish a project while waiting to buy circular needles with a shorter cable. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for making this video 🙏 I watched it through three times before trying the technique and was able to make it work right from my first go as your explanation is so clear. This is a brilliant new-to-me way of working smaller circumference projects in the round when I don’t have the energy for all the rearranging that goes along with magic loop, and has the added benefit of enabling me to utilise longer needle tips that don’t make my hands ache ♥️

Thank you! This may be the solution to my difficulties knitting the sleeves on my linen Cumulus Tee. Linen yarn is soo slippery, my DPNs kept falling out, as did my flexi flip needles. And forget magic loop, I dislike the technique. This seems so much more straightforward. Thank you again!!

I recently found a tutorial for retaining the tension of that last knitted stitch on the back needle! Leaving 3 or 4 stitches on the needle as you pull out the recently knitted needle one can continue knitting.... it eliminates any chance of laddering!

So far, the clearest explanation and tips I have seen and hear. I would prefer not to use the magic loop (extremely confusing) and with DPs I get twisted around or the stitches slide off the bottom end! 😩
