Welcome to Dano Does Things, a place to learn, have fun, and do something creative every week! This week I am dreaming of summer, and using needle felting to "paint" a prairie sky. If I can't go out to see them, then I'll just stay home and create them.

Awesome!! I've only ever made 3d little animals and things, but always wondered how you do these flat painting-like ones. I was planning on spending the day doing felted ball coasters, but looks like way more fun. Thanks so much 😁

Hi, love this tutorial. I am thinking of starting felting and your video is excellent. Can you list the supplies you are using? I found the crafter felt pads but wondering what the felt square is on top of and what needles? Thank you. I have roving.

Thanks for the video. May I ask please, what are you using for your background aka "canvas" ?
@DanoDoesThings

Of course! It's actually just a small desk from Ikea. I got it about four years ago and I just looked and they don't sell it any more unfortunately.

@@mar8014 OH! Haha sorry, blame late night brain. Yes it is just craft felt! Just those sheets you can get from the craft store for like a dollar.

If I made something similar to this and wanted to use it as a coaster do I need to put something on the back like cork or will it be absorbent?
@DanoDoesThings
@DanoDoesThings 11 ай бұрын
Hi Noreen, great question! Wool is incredible absorbent! I will often put a craft felt backing on my coasters, but that is more for aesthetics than anything. I find the wool alone, as long as it's thick enough, to work perfectly fine.

Can it be sewn to a cap or .. you know how military put items on their uniforms, like velcro? I wondered how sturdy it would be as long as its not machine washed. I thought about doing felting about a 2 years ago but i had just had my cervical caging surgeries. I have a few friends in Ukraine and considering making something for winter and or they can put on their stuff, sleeve, or cap. I know silking is great to fix material holes, and strong. I wondered if I added to the backing to strengthen it or if done harder, do the designs on a hard or ?? . Ie: a full face mask/hat with skull on part not full and Ukraine/American flag combo. My husband's gear was a partial wool much like a Kilt. Imagine felting on it a bit. Shoot.. some wear wild designs.. i considered more monotone that fit with uniforms with a slash of color that if needed can be covered or quickly removed. It snows there and they do stuff to blend in with weather... Grays, pale greens, soft white, white, black, browns, military colors. Just a thought.. Or would something dont on a hat/covering handle washings by hand or machine?

Hi Annette! Thanks for watching, and for the questions! If you want to make felted patches to put on clothing or hats, you definitely can! If you want the felt patch to be more durable, a back of silk or cheesecloth can definitely help. I would also encourage you to pre-wash or wet felt the patch before you attach it. Wool likes to shrink when introduced to heat and agitation and soap. If you pre-wash it, then it will shrink and then next time you wash it, it won't shrink and distort as much. Hand washing will help to make it last longer, but wool is pretty sturdy!

what should we buy for beginers?
@DanoDoesThings
@DanoDoesThings 3 жыл бұрын
The easiest is to buy a kit that includes all the supplies (not affiliated but these ones are good: www.ashford.co.nz/felting-kits/product/needle-felting-beginner-kits) , but the very basic of what you need is: - Single medium felting needle - Wool roving in the colors you'd like - A foam block felting surface I also often use scissors and craft felt a lot!

I’m trying my first “painting” and it looks full of holes. What am I doing wrong?
@DanoDoesThings
@DanoDoesThings Жыл бұрын
Hi Linda! The holes that are being made by your needle can be hidden, or made less obvious, using a few techniques. First, make sure you are using enough wool to cover the surface. More layers of wool will help the holes be less obvious. As well, once you’re nearly done, you can switch to a small felting needle or use the same one but felt at a steep angle to the piece and don’t push the needle in very far. Last, once you’re done, a little iron can help as well, if you don’t have 3D pieces in your painting. I hope that helps?
