Hi Michelle I am a new subscriber. I have been a stroke artist for 20+ years, which is very structured strokes combined together to create a painting. I painted mostly landscapes or stand alone flowers. Your method of instruction is open and promotes change and personal creativity. All this is new to me and complete the opposite my painting instruction. I feel confident that if I can relax the ridged hold on my brushes and apply your rules of just enjoy the process and there are really no mistakes I can begin to paint free-hand. Hi Kim, It sounds like you have been working in more of an impressionistic style, which I think has probably put your brain into the mindset of it being okay for the work to have a painterly style, as opposed to it looking exactly like a photograph. I think you'll do great. Have fun, Michelle

As long as you are on telling me what to do. I was wondering do you paint on a smaller scale. Like something I can mail. With this covid I can’t go home so I would love to send a surprise in the mail. Or any suggestions on which one would shrink easily as far as instructions/directions. Mabye 5x7

Gwen W you can paint on a board canvas that is not in a wooden frame. Not expensive. Comes in all sizes. Start small get a few colours to start, so dive in size of canvas does not matter . You can do what Michelle shows just make it smaller.

This was a great lesson on learning the art of making something feel round. I loved the dragonfly training the best because it used blending colors, making highlights and considering perspective and the light source. The carnation colorization and layering techniques were excellent for showing depth and lighting sources. It was appreciated to see the changes in roundness when you were layering colors in the petals. Very nice, thank you.

Yes, I appreciate all the shadowing too. Ive said before, Michelle makes these paintings look so doable, explaining every step. But she never makes mistakes and is a great draftswoman. Im sure she is very proficient in fine arts cos nothing phases her whether its fur or glassy eyes. She has vision which we just go along with and copy. When I was a kid, we would go fishing and the dragonflies would light on the end of my fishing pole and the lake an olive still green in a cove. I can picture a wooden boat with that in the picture. (In my mind not on a canvas). I would like you do a picture like that. Also my mother always made us wear a straw hat as sun protection.

Great job on explaining how to achieve both ripples,shadows & highlights on carnation...a very "rippley" petal...as well as the step by step of getting the dragon fly right. Dragonflies are by far my favorite insect...for a plethora of reasons...I did a painting a few years ago w 1 hovering over some Scottish Thistle...maybe you could do a cool thistle tutorial 1 day...love & light in your new year
