In this lesson, we're going to break down the basics of the song "Vampire" by Olivia Rodrigo and take a look at the scale theory that makes it tick. This song bounces back and forth between two keys, and there are a few different scale shapes that would work, but I'll explain in the lesson how these scale shapes are basically relative to each other and that once you see the circular nature of scales, you'll be able to move back and forth between shapes with ease. I also explain how you can slide scales back and forth so you can play in different keys. In other words, learning the scale shapes for this song does not lock you into only being able to play solos over this song. You can use the same ideas fleshed out in this lesson and move the scale shapes around so you can play over other songs. I also talk a bit about breaking the rules and want you to understand that music is art and that without creativity and ingenuity, there would be no innovation in music. The rules are meant to be broken, so that's one of the reasons I focus more on the feel and dynamics of playing the shapes in a circular way rather than focusing on which scales work best over which keys based on traditional music theory. It's not that traditional music theory doesn't matter. Of course it does! But that doesn't mean you can't try new things, see the fretboard in a new way, or find a few shortcuts to make it easier to just pick up the guitar and play.
