It was originally written by Martin Gore, main songwriter of band "Depeche Mode". Cash covered it but his rendition is pretty raw and really authentic, simply perfect! Thanks for the tutorial vid!

I've been a guitar player for years. As a teenager I just wasn't able to think that there was only one way to play a song and I still can't (I'm almost 30 now). What I'm trying to say here is that I like the way you explain things and the suggestions about finding other ways to do them. In this particular case I can't really think of any, you've made it as comfortable as it gets, but still... Like your way.

you are a great teacher, and I appreciate the way you teach each part of the song structure separately, you are very comprehensive and not confusing, the only thing I would have liked is for you to play the song along with Johnny singing it, so we could also get the lyrics and see the timing of the changes, which is also very helpful to us self taught players, but I really appreciate the quality of your teaching, thanks for providing these awesome lessons!

Steve Stine - Found this on the Depeche Mode website regarding Cash's remake of this song: Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante is the one who played the variation of Martin Gore’s classic chords on Johnny Cash’s acoustic rendition of “Personal Jesus.” Frusciante talked about recording Martin’s song when he said, “Rick Rubin knew I was a fanatic of Depeche Mode. As I knew Martin Gore’s original concept for the songs by chance, it was pretty easy for me in the end to suggest to him a corresponding version on the acoustic guitar.” Unfortunately, because of the wonders of modern recording, Frusciante never crossed paths with his namesake as he explained, “I recorded it in the amount of time it takes to play the song, and I sent it to Rick, and Johnny sang along with a scratch vocal. I never met him.”

Hi Steve! Thx for your video. It seems like you put a lot of effort in it. Though, the thingy you call "riff" is the GROOVE of the song and a crucial bit of the second half is missing here (compared to the original) thus lacking the feel that makes students want to go on. Did you do this to simplify the lesson so that beginners can have a start? Anyway, keep up the good work!

looks easy. I have work to do on my strumming rhythm
@GuitarSongsChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi Keith! Here are some tips. The strumming for the riff is the hardest part so once you get that the rest is very straight forward. The riff is played on strings 6, 5 and 4 and this is the strumming sequence: D - D then pull off - D - DU and UD to start over. When you play the chords G and D/F# the strumming is just D - DU - DU - DU. Remember to keep your arm moving to keep the rhythm flowing and the most important thing is for you to listen to the groove. Don't worry about hitting more than one string at a time and work with it to what's most comfortable for you. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes and thanks for your comment. Keep up the good work!
