Learn to Play The Bagpipe Chanter Scale The Fun Way!

WHAT?! It's actually fun to learn how to play the scale on the practice chanter?!
This is the first lesson to get you bagpipe ready. We start out by helping the fingers of the top hand find those dang holes by playing the high part of the tune; "Cock O' The North".
Too many could be bagpipers end up being wish-I-coulda bagpipers because they never master the basics of the practice chanter. Mastery takes repetition. To stick with it, we need to be having fun. Less boring exercises and more quick wins with great tunes, please!
I have been playing the bagpipes since I was 9 years old. Playing the pipes is second nature to me. I was humbled when I started learning to play the banjo as an adult. I'm telling you from one adult learner to another, if it ain't fun, we will find something else to do.
I am here to bring the fun to the chanter and help you stick with it long enough to memorize your first tune so you can go out and buy a set of pipes, join a band, or pay an Instructor the big bucks. My name is Alec Chisholm and I am here to help you GET BAGPIPE READY!

Last year, my lower lungs collapsed up, so I had to put the chanter down. Fast forward 9 months later, here I am watching your videos. This has been more enjoyable now. At 51, I wanted a whole new enjoyment. My wife calls it a midlife crisis and asked why I can't be normal and buy a dream sports car. Well, this has been my dream.

I purchased a practice chanter 12 years ago and joined the Ancient Order of Hibernians and began taking lessons however, the band had more than enough pipers and NO tenor drummers so that is the instrument I learned then. Flash forward to 2022 and NOW its my time to learn to play the bag pipes! I absolutely love your teaching method and cannot wait to post videos of me learning on our YT Channel as I go. I learned to play the chanter as a teen, and went on to learn to play two whole tunes on the pipes, and that was it. Now I'm 73 and want to do it again. Of course, I've forgotten what I learned back then. I hope you are still into it, since it is now the 11th of March 2021, and seven subscribers? Of course, not many people want to learn pipes. Alec, yes, this looks like a good way to try again, as you said, in a way to stick with it. Let's try.

My family bought me a chanter for fathers day (they knew I wanted one) this year and I try to do half an hour a day then Sax. (yes SAX!!) in the evening. I'm 65 and I got a tin whistle and I played that for a couple of months and then I just got my chanter a few days ago and sometimes I think I suck at it but then I realize hey wait I haven't playing this for like 3 days. But I am making progress and I love watching you and Matt Willis do your little shows and thank you so much for doing these because teaching is a high calling and with these videos I think I could do this bagpipe thing which I really want to do because my son who is age 30 plays a bagpipes and I'd like to play with him together. I'm not sure he thinks it's a great idea but it's okay. He already told me that the world is not need another bad bagpiper because there's a lot of jokes about bad bagpipers but I think at the age of 65 I can just do what I want

This is very helpful. My chanter arrived this morning and I have only just managed to get low G. I didn’t think it would be easy but as I have been playing Irish and Scottish music on flute and whistle for over forty years I had higher expectations of myself. I'm 63 and started 3 years ago.. and i have gotten not bad..to the point that my wife let's me now practice in the back room with the practice chanter..but still learning.. I try to practice at least 1 to 1.5 hours a day .. sometimes 2 hours but like I say still learning ..i find the videos that you have are a big help .. thank you Alec.. I have even now got to buy my first pipes.. and watched your blowing videos ... has helped me a lot as I thought I was doing it wrong but ,, Nope just practice .. so thanks again Alec ..

I am so glad I found this video. Recently I started learning, with no prior musical training or knowledge of reading music. The first month was easy to practice every day. After nearly a year on the pipes I’ve just had the worst practice session for a very long time. Could not get my fingers over the chanter holes correctly. I wanted to stick the lot in the bin. You do know that deep breathing exercises are great for everybody everyday. And that's yet another reason to play the chanter and the bagpipes. Breathing exercises are much more fun with a chanter or bagpipe in your mouth

Greetings, No musical experience, although I do love listening to music in general and the pipes in particular. a couple of months ago I got a practice chanter and after a couple of short practice sessions, realised it would be hard to learn, I just got to the first note (low G) by the book. I have no dexterity with my fingers and I can see finger coordination and finding the holes after lifting when you put them down again, that is what I see as a great challenge for me. Thank you for sharing this video. I am still determined to learn playing the pipes, but with your fun approach, it will make the process enjoyable and having something to look forward to by getting a glimpse of what you can do once with practice and more experience tunes can be achieved. Thanks for sharing Christos! That is so amazing you got a practice chanter 🙂 keep at it, those fingers will find the holes yet! It may seem odd, but I found with learning other instruments, as an adult, sometimes it helps to have my earphones and listen to a podcast or watching TV, while my fingers are going through the movements of the basic scale. Sometimes keeping my self critical brain out of the way, and let my fingers go through the movements and learn their muscle memory can be helpful!

You got me so interested that I went and found my chanter. I thought I'd play for a half- hour or so. But after just a couple of minutes not able to cover the holes yet, I started blowing air around the chanter, drooling, and couldn't keep my lips closed! Good grief! Guess I'll have to work on holding an embouchure and hitting the holes before I can even try Cock O' the North!

Lee Jones! That is so awesome you dug out your practice chanter again! You just made my day :-) keep at it, those fingers will find the holes again. A half hour can be too big of a goal at first, I would recommend two minutes a day for two weeks. Take a video of yourself with your cell phone on the first day and on the last day and marvel at your progress!

I learned to play guitar this way after many failed attempts by people who tried teaching chords and sheet music. I learned some easy riffs which hooked my interest in the instrument, then taught myself everything else. I just got a chanter and tried using the book The Highland Bagpope Tutor Book One, but its written by people who expect thier students will be forced to practice and thus do not care to teach effectively. Playing the scales they had felt like torture. Your way is the natural human way of learning.

@@GetBagpipeReady Thanks. I just found out that the bagpipes I came across are a set from Pakistan made around 2006, and they probably aren't playable according to my research. I'm a mechanical engineer and a craftsman, so I'm thinking of making them playable *by any means necessary* and documenting the process. There are a few challenges that I need some more information on. If I could pick your brain a bit, would you be interested in testing them for me when I'm done? I would send them to you afterwards. I expect a lot of tools, custom made seasoning, and a lathe might be involved.

It’s tough at first! Try relaxing your fingers and when you switch notes rotate your whole forearm slightly instead of holding everything rigid.

Ha! Thanks for the reply. i'm glad you are still doing this. I found your other videos. You'd be even more impressed if you knew finding my chanter took hours of looking in several places through piles, bins, and boxes of stored stuff. I'm really attracted, though. "Cock O' the North" keeps going through my head all day. Two minutes a day sounds ridiculous. But I'll challenge myself to be consistent with it, a life-long challenge. I know consistency is essential for doing anything, but I've never been real good at consistency. Murray~ How's it going? Still trying? Thomas McLean~ I'm short and every mouthpiece is too long. Not unusual, but you have to cut off the tip and sand it down. I've never seen shorter chanters like Alec is talking about, but it makes sense. How can children learn when the pipes are so big? Their fingers wouldn't stretch. L.D.C.~ I was told once that if somebody hasn't played pipes or at least some wind instrument when a kid, they can never learn as an adult. I think that's hooey. Perhaps they'll never get fire fast, or maybe never overcome completely a little bit of crossing noise, but being perfect is probably not your goal. Having fun and piping with others adequately is a fine goal, I think.

Depends what you ended up with Amy... a childs chanter? - better to get and Adult chanter... Scottish smallpipes or fireside pipes? - perfectly playable and a lot of fun! Child sized bagpipes? They probably exist, but I've never seen them so I'm not sure about that.

I had a learners chanter back in 1958 and the damn reed did not want to vibrate. It was an old bamboo reed. The modern ones are plastic and work.

Just got my chanter. Seems like it requires blowing hard, I didn't think it was working at first, and .... It's loud already! I love it. I may need to plan around my families schedule, take it to the beach, etc This is my first time with a reed since I play guitar and sing mostly, are there different reeds for different type of vibration/sounds or are they all the same ? For the chanter, there are not different reeds for different keys. The tone can be sharpened a bit, by syncing the reading to the chanter, or putting more hemp on the read to raise it in the chanter. There are different chanters built for different pitches for the bagpipes, I don’t know if they use the same reed or not. Hope that helps! Bty, I’m just learning banjo and guitar, after playing nothing but mouth blown instruments for years ha ha Ha 😂

Hi, my name is jeremy. I just got into starting to play the bagpipes, joined up with a pipe and drum band and they give free lessons every Wednesday. I had a private lesson from a guy named Derek, he is a world champion piper, nice guy, and was very patient with me, when I was on the chanter playing the scale, from bottom to top it was very frustrating. My lower pinky kept slipping off the low g note hole. My hands started to cramp up and it felt very awkward and uncomfortable. Is that normal and to be expected? When I switch my hands around, right hand on top and left on bottom it seems easier to get the notes out and my fingers down on the holes. Can I play that way if it's more comfortable?

Hi Jeremy, so excited you are getting into piping :) As for switching top and bottom hand, I'd encourage you to also ask the opinions of Derek and you pipe band guys. As for my thoughts, I have come across a couple different pipers, (one whom I am coaching) who have learned and stayed playing with their left hand as the bottom hand. I remember struggling also, with my lower hand pinky finger as a kid too! At the end of the day, If you are playing consistently, you'll make progress! Happy piping :)

could be you need to blow harder... but if you blow too hard then the sound will cut out. The other thing that could be going on is a poor chanter. I am a recorder player and I am looking at taking up the bagpipes. I understand the differences in fingering, BUT what I see on almost every piper confounds me. That is, the way the chanter holes are covered by the fingers. It seems that pipers use the part of the finger between the first and second knuckle. On the recorder it is the tips of the fingers being used. Why the difference?

Exactly! The chanter holes are too far apart to use fingertips. The fingers must spread out and flatten to cover all the holes and still allow for fast finger movement. This is also the same for the Low D Whistle. It will take a while for your fingers to get used to it but You'll get there! Happy piping :)

I've never played a musical instrument in my life! I've never read music notes a day in my life! So Realistically how hard would it be to learn to play the pipes considering I don't have a musical bone in my body?? Thanks

Excellent question! Thanks for asking. Learning to play the pipes is as hard or as easy as you make it to be. The only thing is, if we make it feel hard, we'll never get there. But, if we make it feel easy, then you will stay consistent and actually learn the instrument! Let me provide some suggestions her below... Step 1- Buy a practice chanter ($30). Step 2 - Choose a tiny amount of chanter practice to do... It may be play the scale 1X or it may be something smaller. If you do more, it is a bonus! But don't force yourself to do more than your tiny scale if you don't feel like it. Step 3 - Pick something in your daily routine to piggyback your new chanter playing habit onto. ie; after I ready the morning paper, or after I sit on the chair by the TV. This way you have a built in reminder to play. Step 4 - Celebrate and track your progress. Smile & do a fist pump after you complete your tiny practice. Write a big check mark on the calendar. Give your brain something to be excited about in that moment rather than having your brain being discouraged with unhelpful thoughts of "I don't have a musical bone in my body", or "how long will it be until I can play the pipes". If your brain feels like it is winning by showing up to practice and that is what will keep you consistent. Step 5 - Video record your tiny practice on day two. Then after 2 weeks video record your tiny practice again. Compare the two videos. what improvements do you notice? If you can improve that much in 2 weeks, what is possible in 2 months? 2 years? 12 years?? Benefits of a consistent music practice: 1. Challenges your brain which improves memory and healthy aging 2. Decrease stress and get your mind off of tough things 3. Role models to others that it is OK to try new things 4. Improved coordination and lung capacity You get all the above benefits just by playing a little bit every day!!!! It doesn't matter if you have progressed to the bagpipes yet. But consistency over the long term will get you there! Your musical bones are inside you already, it's just that they are dormant right now. Give them a little bit of the right "feel good" environment each day to help them grow! Use it to improve it! Let me know how it goes :)
