This prayer is an Orthodox practice dates back from the 3rd century ,and it’s words are from the Scripture. Apostle Paul tell us to pray without ceasing (Colossians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:17) and it is not a “vain reputation” because it is written that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved. Turn back to the Orthodox faith my friends, the teachings of Christ and the Apostles and the tradition which has kept by the holy fathers.

The Orthodox Church use the Jesus prayer for meditation. This “Anglican Rosary,” uses that prayer. I am a Catholic and have never found the Jesus Prayer a useful tool for contemplation as I keep focusing on my breathing, not on the contemplative words. I do, however find the Marian Rosary a great way of contemplating the scriptures.

If I may suggest, you can try not focusing of the breathing, if it does not work for you, it is completely optional. Jesus prayer is one of the most powerful weapons of the Church, I urge you to try it again.

The Catholic Church was created from the Western Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church during the 9th century (unfortunately a replacement Orthodox Pope of Rome and Patriarch of the West was never elected); however, England kept its Orthodox clergy until the Norman Conquest in 1066 when the French replaced them with Catholic clergy. The Jesus Prayer is Orthodox, so that may be why the Church of England uses it.

As far as I understand it, use of the Jesus Prayer is recent in Anglicanism, innovated in the 1980s by Lynn C. Bauman, new-age ecumenist gnostic and registered sex offender. He obviously borrowed it from Eastern Christianity, where its use is much more traditional and central. Many Orthodox priests do not recommend praying it silently, or focusing on the breathing as in yogic practice, not because they believe that this kind of meditative contemplation (hesychasm) is demonic or the expression of theological error, as seems to be the Catholic position, but because it can easily lead to spiritual delusion and is best left to monastics, or at least built up to very slowly and carefully.

Jesus teaches us how to pray. Trust in the Word of God not the word and traditions of man. Matthew 6:5-15 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

@ruthgoebel723
@ruthgoebel723 2 жыл бұрын
The Bible says, “vain repetitions”. Psalm 118 says “for his mercy endureth forever” four times. Psalm 136 says “for his mercy endureth forever” thirty six times. How many times did Jesus say, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee”? When we attempt to memorize Scripture we do a lot of repetition till those precious words are burned into our memories. The vanity part when we use those words for show, trying to make others see how ‘holy’ we are. What we do in our prayer closet is never vain.

@@ruthgoebel723 Our God is the God of the living! 1 Peter 4:6 "good tidings were proclaimed to the dead," and Hebrews 11 goes through a litany of saints only to be followed up in 12:1 by saying that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses. The debate exists between "soul sleep" (not much evidence of that in the scriptures) and conscious existence after death with the coming of Christ. Revelation mentions how the martyrs are in the presence of God asking how long it will be until their blood is avenged.
@paulschuebel5487
@paulschuebel5487 2 жыл бұрын
Once you establish at least the POSSIBILITY of saints being able to intercede on our behalf, it makes at least some sense that that would still entail that as part of God's plan, since we can do nothing without his grace. See 1 Corinthians 15:12-14 (not a proof-text, per se, and I understand there's a lot of ambiguity in trying to come to theological conclusions from piecing verses like these together). If you look at these in conjunction with one another, all that's left is the conversation about whether we OUGHT ask the saints for their prayers to God, and the misconstrued notion that some people pray to the saints the way we pray to God. I grew up Catholic and didn't fully "get" what that should look like (for a Catholic, of course) in terms of how we ask them for their prayers, but I think that's a useful conversation we can be having with one another across the Catholic-Orthodox-Protestant divides.

Prayer is the opening up of the heart to God as a friend. Useless repetitive phrases is not how you communicate with people and it shouldn't be how you communicate with God. The bible does not endorse any kind of rosary and it compares those who repeat prayers to the pagans, who also have repetitive prayers.
