Thanks for this video. I inherited my Grandmother's Singer. Still have the receipt from when she bought it new in October of 1935. Must have been a huge purchase for her as she paid $56.36 for it

I am a man who loves antiques but never splurged on anything major. An elderly woman posted her Singer 1910? Red Eye with 5 drawer cabinet. A little bit of wear/tear underneath. Was her granny’s. No idea why she sold it but I told her if she felt regret later on that she could have it back. I just ordered two belt kits. I am teaching myself sewing/tailoring and I also aim to learn a bit about machine repair hopefully. $200 and she was willing to knock off another 50 but I said no, so I wouldn’t feel guilty. My best friend’s mom used one of these to sew on when we were kids. I am over the moon to have this in my house. I’ve just been staring at it for the last hour

My entire childhood was played out to the sound of a singer treadle machine. Mommy used one every week on some project. Clothes, curtains or patching play clothes it was always in use. I love the sound of a treadle machine 🥰

Wow didn’t know there were still components available for these machines!! I sewed quite a lot on these after I had a hand driven one and was so proud of my ‘ automatic ‘ machine. For many many years I have had now the modern electrical and after that even electronic ones but I am very happy to learn that I still can repare my old trusty Singer !! Thanks!

Just got mine oiled up, waiting for the bobbin cover plate, and I need to trim the belt it has. I’m quite pleased to have found it, since I am NOT paying $600+ for a dumb computer when I typically only see with a straight stitch on a basic 25 year old knock off brand electric machine. I have never used a treadle, but I should adapt quickly. Mine is well balanced

I just got a Martin Decker treadle machine and the belt is slipping. I am about to order a new belt so I am attending KZbin University to bring me up to speed. I have wanted another treadle since I left my first one behind 50+ years ago (long story) and finally - I have one. I just don't recall many details so I am having to learn all over again. I think I will use my Dollar Tree zip ties, cheap and plentiful, to keep the belt in position on the wheel while fitting - then snip them off when I am done. Your video is well done, very clear, and just what I need! Thanks!!

Saved my bacon, thanks! My machine just got back from service - the treadle runs smoothly, and so does the machine, but the belt wont turn the machine. I've been thinking it's too loose... floppy loose. I've been searching for some sort of adjustment knob or tensioner pully for a week, now... and all along it was as simple as shortening the belt. I'll take a *smidge* off and see if it helps!! Thank you!

I've just today started trying to get the machine running. I put on the belt not realizing it had to be sized. Going to try again and fully expect to get better results after watching the video. Machine is a Singer 127 and the instruction book dates from March 1918.

Hi! Thank you so much for your video. I just replaced the belt in an antique Singer machine. The tension is good. The length is good and it is in all the grooves is supposed to be… for some reason that needle won’t move at all when I press the pedal. The belt itself is moving nicely. It’s my first time doing this, I was wondering if you’ve ever had this happen or any advice? Thank you so much!

Make sure the friction nut is engaged (it's the large flat piece right in the middle of the handwheel). You disengage it when winding the bobbin, and then re-engage to sew.

Thank you so much for this video. I recently received an old singer treadle machine. It was my husbands grandmothers. He is currently doing some repair to the wooden cabinet. I have my new belt and bobbins from you. When he is finished with the cabinet I will be putting on the belt, loading up a bobbin, and see what happens.

I recently purchased an old treadle machine that has had an electric foot peddle attached so I can’t see where the treadle belt should go in behind the had wheel as the foot peddle has a belt too and seems to be going where the treadle belt should go Can you help please 😊 Thank you for this tutorial very clear and easy to follow 😊😊

We just got ours and the belt needs attention. It came with 2 belts, one has some black "tape" or something at the staple. My wife wondered if we could put some heat shrink over the staple or is that helpful?

I just bought a Singer 66 (and don't know how to use). It came with a belt that I just cut to size but when I press the treadle with my foot, the belt feeds through but does not turn the handwheel...it seems to slide over it and occasionally gets stuck. Does that mean I need a new belt (current one looks very old), or do I need to poke a new hole to make it a little tighter, or do I need to clean the pulley that the belt feeds through so that there is more friction that will turn the wheel? Basically, do you think I should get a new belt or am I not correctly measuring the one I have? Thanks in advance!!

There could be a few reasons why your vintage sewing machine's belt is not turning the handwheel. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot and fix the issue: Make sure that the belt is not damaged or worn out. If the belt is frayed, stretched, or otherwise damaged, it may not be able to turn the handwheel effectively. From what you're describing, I would recommend replacing the belt. Check to make sure that the belt is properly aligned and tensioned. The belt should be tight enough to turn the handwheel without slipping, but not so tight that it causes strain on the motor or other parts. Since you will likely be replacing the belt, you can test to see if tightening the belt allows the handwheel to move. That way you know how tight to have the belt when you install the new one and you don't have to worry. Check to see if there are any other mechanical issues with the machine. For example, the gears or other moving parts may be worn out or damaged, which could cause the belt to slip or not turn the handwheel properly. If these suggestions do not help, I suggest checking with a local technician. :)

Do try to get the length right the first time if you can, because while you can always shorten it again, every time you have to open the staple again is one time closer to when it breaks. :( I am lucky I kept the staple from the belt I replaced. Watching you push on the installed belt was helful though, because I was able to see that I did have more give than you did, which would explain why it was still slipping. Hopefully with that visual in mind I can get it right on this next try.

We asked our head technician and here's what he said: "You can use mink oil or a home-made solution. For the home-made solution, mix 1 quart of warm water, 1 tablespoon of Johnson & Johnson Natural Baby Soap , and a couple drops of vinegar. Apply the solution or oil to the belt periodically as necessary!" Hope this helped!

Hang on hang on... you can thread and operate a sewing machine - a task which I spent 35 years thinking of as witch craft... and you can't hammer a nail through something? I have a difficult time believing that.

It releases the tension on the belt when you put it away. I am uncertain of a way to prevent this.

What do you do with the belt when you want to fold the machine back into the desk part
@margaretrosesimons1757 Жыл бұрын
Just pop it off the big wheel underneath. Mine has a little lever connected to an eye that the belt goes through. When I push the lever to the side, it helps to disengage the belt so the machine can be folded into the table. I just got mine and am learning so much through KZbin videos. I've cleaned and oiled much of it, including the clutch, but I'm still having trouble knowing if I've got the drive belt too tight. It treadles and hand spins freely when the clutch is disengaged, but it's impossibly stiff when clutch is engaged just spinning it by hand. Then when I try to engage the treadle, the belt slips and is still dreadfully stiff.

Using a treadle machine can be a little tricky at first. It definitely takes practice. Personally, I found it easier to get in the rhythm using only one foot versus two. I suggest looking up KZbin videos on how to operate a treadle. There are some wonderful tips out there; however, it really does just take practice. :)
