I loved riding a pump track close to my house. One day, I was tired and thought just one more round. I fell on a back side turn, reached backwards with my left arm and perfectly lined it up. The force of impact broke my shoulder and upper arm. The surgeon said it was a real mess and 2 years later my should is still in bad shape. No more pump tracks for me. So my advice, avoid riding tired ...

I’ve really gotten into pumptracks lately, aided mostly by the fact that unlike ramps, which I am terrible on, it’s just rolling and I’ve done that since the 70’s 😄 It is amazing just how tiring it is on the legs though. Our local is around 200m maybe with 4 berms, and after one lap I’m wrecked. All good points you made here. Bending the knees when you’re learning is essential to gain speed. I’ve also found that keeping the front foot inside the front bolts helps prevent you pitching off the front. 78a wheels and trucks that turn well are also of benefit. I’ve got a couple of setups I favour, one I purpose built and cut my own deck for with Ricta Clouds, Ace 66’s, a 15” wheel base and a short nose. The other is a 36” Penny longboard which is perfect for the job, fast and forgiving. I recently acquired a Santa Cruz surf skate from your friends at Waves that I’m really itching to give a good thrashing on there but weather hasn’t allowed sadly.

Never pump skated. Just found out about it. Closest one is 1.5 hours away. But they are building one in my city and a new skate park next to it. Should be done in a year or two. Can’t wait! Trying to get better at skating till then.

Thank you for the video! I learned how to pump and do a backside curve pretty easily, but during a frontside curve I fell and sprained my knee. I'll try it again as soon as I'll get off crutches Also, fellow skaters: please wear a helmet!

Desborough, near Kettering in Northamptonshire has a fantastic little pump track. My friend James and I have been learning to crack it over the summer and can now do multiple laps in both directions. Great fun and exercise! 😍👍

Thanks for the vid! Was just thinking about that. I do believe, front- and backside are rather the other way. -->turn towards your front, frontside.
@JonBishopSkate Жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the feedback. Yeah it tends to be confusing as in street skating it’s the opposite. But for transition skating or surfing if you are facing the ramp or wave then it’s frontside (toe side in snowboarding) If your back is facing the ramp it’s backside (heel side in snowboarding)

I hit this pump track the other week managing about 2/3 of a lap on my skateboard! Also bombed round on my scooter which was also lots of fun. 😍👍

Great video Jon, just got a board after 40 years this week and went to the pump track. Bumps looked scary. Went back today dropped in, great buzz. Will leave the turns for another day. You decribed the feeling really well and great tips. One question looking at a few of the comments, do a lot of people pick up a serious injury at some stage?
@JonBishopSkate3 ай бұрын
Hey dude, many thanks for the kind words. I wouldn’t want to influence your experience going forward, but I recon it’s worth being mindful that injuries are part and parcel of it for most people? That said a pump track is one of the more safe terrains? Good luck and take it steady !
@TheLadder222 ай бұрын
Made it all the way round today, thanks to more dynamic pumping. No injuries yet, mind you I am wrapped up like the Michelin man 😅 I windsurf which takes ages to progress (wonderful and all as it is), the skateboard seems so much quicker to get the hang of, in the early stages at least.

Never seems to be any tarmac pump tracks by me, they're all loose/hard pack and or soil so not too great for skaters, especially without all terrain wheels he he! 🤪👍 Great tips btw, defo looking out for a suitable pump track to pump around sometime 🤟😎👊

Nice vid! Do have a question, i am on a skateboard and surfskate but having some trouble where to place my back foot. Front is above the axle and back also but see a lot of people getting backfoot on the kicktail. I did once and smashed backwards on top because weight was to much in the back. But how do you manage to go around with foot on kicktail without lifting front and smashing backwards?
@JonBishopSkate8 ай бұрын
Yeah, back foot in the pocket just behind the bolts, not right on back on the tail. This provides good control, just even out the foot pressures, it’s more likely you came off the back from leaning backwards which is common?
@sjoerdje2178 ай бұрын
@@JonBishopSkate thnx for your reply. Think so yes. Only use to longboards where standing between the axles so no experience with kicktails but want to learn to use them and get my stance on a skateboard correctly. When going up or down on the pumptrack i think i shifted weight way too far back and therefore slammed backwards. Do you lean more on frontfoot to have front wheels planted?
@JonBishopSkate8 ай бұрын
@@sjoerdje217 yeah, just centre your weight over the board and go with it, when going down a hill lean forward, everybody leans back to start with and comes off the back.
@sjoerdje2178 ай бұрын
@@JonBishopSkate i will do! Thnx. Already looking forward to practise👍🏻😄

Great video man. Got a few pumpers around here I'm gonna try out once the snow melts! Are you running 78a's for hardness out of curiosity?

Jon Bishop no worries mate. Yeah it's one of my locals. Only been a couple of times since I dislocated my shoulder there, but would have been well up for a pump track session if you're ever around that way again.

Can you pump with a regular board on a pump tract?
@JonBishopSkate Жыл бұрын
Yes indeed !! Harder wheels make a bit more noise on the tarmac and they also may have less grip, but it’ll work fine. Here is a pump track video I recorded on a regular setup. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXKYeIKqjLJ7fNEsi=DUrRcJJyDjWlnOMw
