I have been struggling with sight reading using "notes" instead of intervals. Can't wait to begin using your approach. I really appreciate your honesty about this not happening overnight and it taking significant work. As you said, I had been "fooled" by other teachers boasting how fast their method works. Thank you Brenda for your awesome instructions.

This is very helpful for reviewing written sheet music and developing sight reading skills. I took 10 years of lessons and played advanced pieces that I slogged through from beginning of school term to spring recital. I didn't learn rhythm, sight reading, accompaniment, and left years of lessons with a repertoire of 5 technical pieces. I didn't know how to just play when I no longer had 3-5 hours a day of available practice time. Now returning to piano 30+ years later I'm learning to enjoy easier arrangements that I can quickly bring to tempo with a little bit of challenge, just to keep things interesting 😉

Hi! Thanks for that. I already did this naturally and automatically to a degree but did not think to be conscious of it. I am ready for it and pretty sure Ive improved my musicianship lately because all of a sudden I figure out melodies quicker than I used to be able to. Doing this I imagine the ear will get better still. Someone mentioned one of your videos on circle of 5ths and I got some more discoveries from it. Thanks again

@@PianoandVoicewithBrenda Thanks for giving a response to compliment. I am interested in learning music theory to help my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter who has a musical gift and I want to learn to help her when it is time for her to start taking classes. I want to be involved and I want to know the fundamentals to help her with practice and homework the proper way. It is a little to early for her yet, but I want to be ready when the time comes. I am more interested in helping her out to avoid the mistakes I made with her mother.

It's interesting that pianists don't think of letter names when reading complex music. I've heard teachers say the same about chords, that they process the whole chord as one piece of information, to save time. I believe it, but it's hard to imagine doing this while sight-reading, since we have to know whether to sharpen or flatten each note. How do you play within the key signature without thinking of the note names? I'm guessing it becomes second nature after enough exposure to music in a variety of keys.
