I like fishing leeches in the spring just after ice comes off the lakes and ponds. I like to use this as a casting pattern or a trolling fly, but it also works well when dead drifted under a strike indicator on a windy day.

Looks absolutely disgusting when wet which is a real compliment, since that is exactly how I view these critters when wet wading in shorts. The ostrich is a neat idea, since it will avoid the usual marabou wrap around the hook problem on leeches. I’ll bet you could also use peacock herls on the body to give a bit of a sheen.

Thanks a million, FlyTyer1948. I agree, peacock herl would look great with the marabou. Cheers

Piscator Flies thanks for the link👌. I saw an Orvis video on those 🐉 dragon tails "add on" material. Very sinuous, would make a nice leech but they're pretty long. Pike /bass size. You up on that material? The 2018 Tie One On is this Saturday. I'm planning on going. Clouser, Cohen, will be there. Cheers...

I've been seeing them make the rounds, but I haven't had a chance to see them in person. They are nice and big, I'd probably give them a try for pike and bass. Perhaps even the gar in Lake Ontario would give them a look.

Piscator Flies LOL! Throwing a fly into Back Bay in the 50's was like rolling a wine bottle into a jail cell, you knew something was going to grab it! I love that guy! I have a red revolving spool reel and a rod like they showed in that clip. Thanks man, I'm subscribed to Flymen too but I must have missed that. Amazing how the times have changed. Thanks again!

@PiscatorFlies

Yes, you can use the lead-free weighted wire in place of the lead wire. You could also use 3-4 black brass beads, one at each stage should work fine. Cheers

I have a question. Why put on the ostrich herl? OK, but almost anything works. I just use any kind of black-ish chenille or heavy thread. Flash ok, but not necessary. A few feathers of red maribou does the same thing--calls attention to a 'flaming personality type of leech"--but not necessary. Mainly, just make a good base of thread and start adding black maribou and it will look like a leech. I caught over a dozen trout on one of these just this morning. The fish were eating some sort of diving beetle, a dragonfly nymphs, lots and lots of scuds, a few leeches, and some chrionomids. Not very particular. They wanted the leech moving slowly in three inch twitches.

I never understand why people show a wet fly in the air. It's just not how the fly will look in the water.
