Thank you for another absolutely awesome video, Eliana. I'm a melody fanatic, and always have been, but its importance has only grown in my own music over time. These days I tend to compose melodies first and the chords/harmony after, but I used to do it the other way around...and it was always a struggle for me! It was like having to "mine" the melody from the chords. If I'd encountered a lesson like this back then it would have been SO much easier. Also, I love how you emphasize the importance of highlighting chords tones; that has been a big factor in me improving my improvisation, as well. Anyway, thanks for another great one!

I totally agree, having melody first will make and give more room to interesting chord ideas, but for me personally melody by itself doesn't evoke the mood and emotion, so i tend establish a root with a bass played in the left hand to get the idea of how the melody fits with the dominant, leading tones, but a good point there!

My main problem with composing music is structure. I came here looking for a video about structure and I haven't found anything about that on KZbin. I mean, creating a melody with its chords, the drums, the bass line is one thing. But what to me is difficult is how to make an entire theme, with the intro, etc., without the parts sounding like different themes stuck together with glue. A video tutorial about that would be very helpful.

Hi, Im loving your vid's, greetings from the UK! just one question, with your melody I noticed it all fitted to a scale? but i get confused with melodies sometimes, i know that when producing my synthwave & melodic techno music i tend to keep the chords in a scale, like in C minor or something, and i usually keep my melodies in that scale, but if my chords & arps are in a C minor scale, does my melody have to fit that scale or can I go off course a bit and use notes not within the scale? Ive noticed you’ve used some notes not in that scale, is there a name for this? sorry, i hope that makes some kind of sense lol..obviously I havent studied music theory but i understand a bit about scales, lol thanks matt Show less
@ElianaDAngelo5 жыл бұрын
Greetings back to you! Well it really depends on context. You can go out of scale if you want and use those notes to create tension to a note that is in the scale. I think a great scale to start learning that concept is the blues scale. There is an added note in that scale that is a GREAT intro to the idea of accidental notes. Using notes and chords that are called nondiatonic, chords/notes that are are diatonic. I personally love nondiatonic music that moves around a lot. I think learning music theory might really help you a lot. It can be very tough at first but by the way you talk and are trying to break things down I think it might really help you grow! Over time I'll start doing theory videos, but I'm trying to find a way to make it not super confusing. Hope that helped out!
