My uncle is deaf and is a master mason. He learned entirely by watching. No one speaks his language. So, I don't think you need to learn Spanish to learn how to do this. Just be a very careful observer.

Ron Mtz I appreciate the visual but really need the details at 5:00 broken down. He was explaining something important that was lost to us English speakers. Something to do with roof math I think

Thanx 4 sharing. I am about to build my own earthen home, but I was worried about the roof. I really didnt want to use metal or wood, and I had never seen any videos that showed an earthen roof. This is a GREAT "how to" video, and I'm sure after a few viewings I can figure out how to do it myself. Again, THANX! :0)

All the details are exquisitely engineered for optimal efficiency at the lowest cost. This young builder is impressive. Many quick-build shelter videos speak about the lack of affordable housing in the 3rd World but in Western countries there's a crying dearth of housing too. In France wher I live there's a permanent crisis in husing and if people knew how to build with cob or adobe the crisis would let up a bit.

That would explain why they finished the roof they way they did. Their's is a more arid environment. In my environment, I'm afraid a roof like that would just dissolve down to the plastic water barrier. I'm amazed that they didn't build the vaulting on a temporary wooden form. Some amazing skill there. An inside shot of the ceiling would have been nice.

As primitive as this appears there is really a lot of engineering in this structure. A HUGE amount of thermal mass in the roof, absorbs heat through the day (slowing the penetration of the heat into the house during the day) and releases it throughout the night, the length-wise steps, or grooves, in the roof, give tooth to the cob. pretty neat stuff. Great video, thanks for sharing.
@godaboveall8344 Жыл бұрын
I wonder if this cob style of roof is feasible in temperate climates with more rain
@a.hammad9194 Жыл бұрын
@@godaboveall8344 I'm not sure if this applies to all similar building techniques but I was told by locals during a visit to Aswan, Nubia that their houses were severely damaged by unexpected rain a few years back so had to rebuild the houses with concrete to avoid this happening in the future.
@godaboveall8344 Жыл бұрын
@@a.hammad9194 Thanks for sharing, maybe best to plant the roof in grasses possibly with a waterproof layer not sure if it is possible without that layer
@a.hammad9194 Жыл бұрын
@@godaboveall8344 the issue isn't just with the roof; water will inevitably wear down the walls too.
@a.hammad9194 Жыл бұрын
@@godaboveall8344 it's worth mentioning that this sort of architecture is common in the drier parts of Egypt but nonexistent in the rainy north. I'd imagine that's not a coincidence.

fascinating technique would love to see this built with modern materials that are safe and not destroyed by things like rain. maybe have this construction inside without outer material so you could have the thermal mass of the Earth but then have the protection and strength of modern material but then it wouldn't be free which I think is kind of the point LOL
