She’s making it easier for you! It’s more complicated than that. “ban” means friend and you don’t use that unless the person you are talking to is same age with you, but native Vietnamese rarely use that word to say hello. In English, there are just few pronouns, “you” and “I”, “my”. In Vietnamese there are over 13 pronouns used to address someone and yourself depending on their age, gender, and how they are related to you.

Be careful if you wanna learn Vietnamese by this video. She doesn't understand this language and the way she pronunces it likes a foreigner speaking Vietnamese. For example, "how are you" isn't used in this situation, we just use it when meeting a friend that no see for a long time. And if you wanna say it, let use "Ban kwea khong?" instead of "Yaa kwea khong?". It's wrong.

thanks for ur comments! I just been in China (traveling), and I realised that Vietnamese language is related a bit to Mandarin and Cantonese. My mother is Chinese-Vietnamese and she confirmed that. (she can speak Cantonese, ya, but she never teaches me !_! ) I been studyin Japanese for 3 years and I also see that Vietnamese and Japanese language have some similarities. But for me, Vietnamese is the hardest ^^

@learnvietnamese usage of "Da" depends on situations. Just like "Yeah" in english which can be taken as an agreement or a responding sounds. Da can be used at the beginning of a sentence to show respect to the others especially the elders. In vietnamese conversation, addressing others and ourselves bases on the relatioship or social status or position. It may be complicated but I think it should be introduced first so that "I Love You" can be more colorful in that stance

In Vietnamese, the elderly people doesn't say "Dạ" to younger ones. So...when she asked: "Chú có muốn... " then he replies: "Dạ không, cám ơn" is not usual! :-) It should be: "Không, cám ơn!"

@MoriAryka In Vietnamese "Chào" means "Hello", "Bye" or "Goodbye" is "tạm biệt" :) You also can say "Chào" at the end of conversation but it's not really right.

@gabspen Well, I'm vietnamese and I think it's the best to say " Chào Bạn " . You can say that all the time when you meet somebody . Saying " Chao ong " or " Xin chao " is a little formal. Saying " Chao Ban" is more friendly than say " Chao Ong " or Xin Chao coz " Bạn " = you and Ong = Mr

I asked my Vietnamese learner about "Bạn khỏe không ?" and "Dạ khỏe không?" She said it's correct to say "Bạn khỏe không?" When to use "Dạ" is in a reply to an elder. Ex:"Dạ khỏe.... I hope I wrote this right. I'm just learning how to speak Vietnamese first.

hey you should start with Vietnamese because we have Latin character, the Mandarin character will be much harder to learn. Once you finish Vietnamese you can move to Mandarin or Japanese (trust me I'm Vietnamese and I'm learning Mandarin) (I apologize if I made any grammar mistake)

"Dạ" uses in the answer from asking person if you want it to be politer as kiitenenene said instead of put it in the question at the first time like that. I think the idea here is the teacher want to use "Bạn" (means: "You" or "Are you" in this context), but somehow she confused or couldn't distinguish the different between "Dạ" and "Bạn" in normal Vietnamese conversations. a quick note, vietnamese "yes" is diverse unlike in english, there are many words for affirmative "yes" example - "eh, đi xem phim không?" (hey, let's go to a movie?" if you want to say yes then here are your options "ừ, vâng," or simpler, use the first word of the question to answer, "đi" "muốn ăn cái gì không?" and for a yes answer you would say "muốn" and of course add the dạ in front of speaking to a respectable person "dạ muốn"

@walalang429 "Bác" for both male and female who seems older or just about your parents age. "Ông" for male who seems like your grand-dad, and "Bà" for female who seems like your grand-mom. "Cô" for female who < your parents, and "Chú" for male who < your parents.

@GuardianDemonX as i told you. the hardest part in vietnamese is the pronunciation... mandarin and japanese also are tonal like vietnamese. there is no tenses, conjugation in vietnamese... mandarin, too but japanese, it has a lot of tenses or conjugation. but you need to know when you write one difficult word in vietnamese or mandarin, vietnamese is totally more,more faster.. mandarin has a lot of characters (small, short, big, long). that's why mandarin (chinese language) is also an art.

@UndergorundGlacius lol It's because alot of Asians(not just viets) are used to other Asians and they are more comfortable with them. I have a Vietnamese friend who has no other Asian friends, and when he finally met someone else that was Asian he was happy cause he felt like the guy knew how he felt. True some viets keep to themselves but it's mostly because of shyness or afraid of being awkward.

the girl has more of a southern accent. it's different. in the north people pronounce the words how they spell it. for e.g. "Ten ban la gi? (What's your name)" northern viets say "Ten ban la zee?" whereas ppl from the south say "Ten ban(g) la yee?" D and G are more like a "z" in the north and in the south people say "y"

@walalang429 Both north and south accent are officially used. However I would suggest you to know both! There are tones of regulations in speaking, Vietnamese is a language with social order. So with the basic meeting for people whom you might not know: Em chào ... ( it means "hello to ...") You must use "Em" to prefer yourself as lower rank and always, to show politeness! "..." is various, depend on who you talk too. "Anh" for male > you, "Chị" for female > you....

@LunzZ Ho Chi Minh city is in the South and Ha Noi City (the capital of Viet Nam) is in the North. In the South, They often say "dạ" before "khỏe không?"/ "Khỏe", but in the North, "dạ" is absent ^^ Another way, "Yes" is "dạ vâng", "dạ có" in the South but in the North, It is "Vâng ạ" when you talk with the older and "ừ" when you talk with the younger. ................. It's so difficult to explain it to you ~"~

@GuardianDemonX for example, i will compare vietnamese to english. vietnamese words dont have past tense form , part participle form, ect. you dont have to add -ed (regular) after the verb or change the word (irregular) if you're talking about something happened in the past if the situation that you are talking about is in the past already. i'm vietnamese so maybe i think like that. but when i learn english, i know vietnamese doesnt have too much grammar to study, that's it..

I agree with you, Im a Vietnamese and it sounds weird to me.. When she asked him "how are you" she should use "ban" or "anh" and not "Da" Its maybe ok for new vietnamese learner but I think they will know how correct it to a more polite way later. Personally I think if you're going to teach phrases, you should start by identifying the words used. Prime example, in English, "my name is" translated to Vietnamese is turned around into "name me/my/mine is", but she doesn't explain which word means what in Vietnamese. Just a heads up that Vietnamese isn't like Spanish where subject then description is the go-to, but can be said multiple different ways by who and how you address people.

actually they are all from southern Vietnam so their pronunciation is not the standard one. And when two people are at same age like her and him, they don't use "Dạ" in their conversation. "Dạ" just uses when a younger talks to an older one.

@ikegami1jp Japanese is indeed Altaic, and it's true that it isn't a tonal language, but it does have a sort of pitch accent (some European languages have it too). Khmer isn't tonal either. In East/Southeast Asia, the following are tonal: All Chinese varieties, Vietnamese, the entire Tai-Kadai family (including Thai and Lao) and the entire Hmong-Mien family. Burmese (and related Tibetan languages), Korean and Japanese have pitch accents, while Mongolian, Khmer and Malay are not tonal at all.

You use "Dạ" for politeness or courtesy, like "Sir/Madam". But in Vietnamese, you use it to everyone, and it's absolutely necessary when you talk to elders. There're different usage in Southern though, "Dạ" can be used for "Yes, Sir/Madam", while in Northern, you use "Dạ có". Anyway, we really really don't say "Dạ khoẻ không?" We have a huge amount of pick up line, but maybe the easiest way is to introduce youself first, and then ask if he/she is willing to talk with you.
