Learn Welsh with Will - Ep1: Learn Welsh the Easy Way - Informal greetings -
Learn welsh along with a Welsh learner who wants to learn the fun and easy way. I plan to learn Welsh the same way children do, by listening and copying. I don't want to get bogged down by syntax,grammar and mutations so I'm going to speak what I hear spoken around me here in North Wales. The fact people try so hard to keep their mother tongues alive is wonderful. Pretty much the same thing Occitans or Catalans fight for, though Catalan has a lot of priority in Catalonia as it's spoken by from 75 to 80% of people here (pretty much everyone if we only count teenagers and children) and almost everyone understands it.

I'm English and as odd as this sounds, I quite like the idea of learning another British language and welsh seems cool. Sounds really hard to learn though. I feel that we as English speakers are very ignorant of foreign languages and I would like to change that about myself.

Excellent idea, although Welsh isn't a foreign language, it's the original British (Brythonic), language before the Romans and Saxons invaded. In fact, the Welsh word for "Engish" is "Saison" - Literally "Saxon"

Yes, Welsh is a difficult language for a native English speaker to learn, understand and speak, but determination and practice will get you to a good level. Just don't be afraid of or intimidated by some of the grammar, such as mutations, and the pronunciation of some letter sounds which do not exist in English, such as ll (double L), ch, and rh. I would love to see you do some "Welsh read aloud" videos with text displayed on the screen. Perhaps a popular book in Welsh like Harry Potter. As a language learner, I find reading to be a great way to build vocab and pronunciation fast. Just a thought and thanks for the great videos.

My dad is Welsh, me and my brother were born and brought up in Wales until I was about 7, but then we moved away to Norfolk in England, where my mum is from. I love the Welsh language and all of my family in Wales speak it fluently to each other so I would love to be able to join in conversation. Wonderful video, great to see you taking the time to learn Welsh. However, there is a difference in South Walian and North Walian. I am from South Wales, so always say 'Shwmae.' It's good that you have put that in the video, because I don't think many realise the differences between North and South. :)

I'm a fluent speaker and grew up speaking both English and Welsh so I'm lucky. But my dad learnt to speak it and he speaks perfect Welsh. There was a programme on S4C recently - Hwb/Galw Acw with Welsh speakers learning with the help of Ioan Talfryn. So to be doing it on your own is an achievement :-).

I hope eventually you made videos in which you are trying to converse with fluent Welsh speakers. I think it would be good to see you getting better and better at speaking Welsh, but mostly I would love to see actual conversations, no matter how simple. Something a traveler would say, like asking for directions or ordering in a restaurant, or something like that. At least, that's the sort of things I remember when I took a foreign language in college.

This is great. Being from Wirral the usual Welsh lessons are based on south Wales and that is hard to get my accent around. North Welsh accents are a lot closer.

Great idea. I spent 8 weeks (1 day per week) in Denbigh college learning Welsh and I regret my brain collapsed and devolved into cabbage. I utterly failed to grasp the "course" and failed to learn any Welsh (well, I did learn some but it is long since forgotten and the material we were taught is not used in day to day "talk" as you have demonstrated). Good luck with the series, I think it is a brilliant idea :o)

I like the Fact you use North and South Welsh, I'm from South Wales and speak a little bit of Welsh (Dwi'n siarad ychydig/Timid Bach) but would like to learn more. For goodbye we say Hwyl and Hwyl fawr which means goodbye :)

I've start by trying to memorise the pronunciation of the Welsh alphabet so that I can hopefully pronounce Welsh language when I see it even if I don't know the meaning. So now during the day I try to keep repeating the words I'm learning here in my thinking . I did notice that the name Will Huw transposed Huw Will ,the Welsh for fun 😄

Never understood why the original British language isn't taught throughout Britain. I'd love to have learnt Welsh growing up. Born in The Midlands so spent a lot of time in Wales but never got round to learning any (other than the words you see all over the road like croeso and araf) Tried Duolingo but think I'm better hearing a person speaking rather than the quite robotic voice you get on an app (I tried some duolingo phrases on a Welsh friend and apparently said something about wanting to f**k dragons so I gave up😂)

Yes there are differences. For example if we wanted to say "Go out", up here we would say "mynd allan" but I gather that down there it would be "mynd mas". etc.

Brett Godefroi Most British people are unaware that the original "British" language is actually Welsh. English is a more recent (German) import. This is reflected in the Welsh word for English (Sais), which literally means "Saxon" Whenever the Romans refered to the British language, it was Welsh they were talking about. Welsh is a Brythonic language which is where the word "Britain" (and indeed Breton) come from. It's nice to know our own REAL language.

+Will Huw I have looked at several language tress on line, and all of them show Irish, Gaelic, Welch, and Cornish as branches of the Celtic language. So they must be somewhat related. I also understand that the Celts arrived in the British Isles long before the Angles and Saxons. So would not all four of those languages be considered as there before English? Is it not also true that the Pics, were there before the Celts. Also, isn't it true that one knows for sure what the ancient prehistoric Britons spoke before the arrival of the Picks and Celts?

I live and was born in Wales, and I have heard some people speak in this language, although unfortunately, some of them do not use it properly. I am aware it is a Celtic language, but it sounds as if it has Inuit and Ural-Altaic influences, some of the 'L' pronounciation being similar to Mongolian, also with some of the back of the throat pronounciations.

Sorry, I shouldn't really have posted here. I'd been looking at various sites that offered gee-whiz language learning systems, and my patience had run out. What you're doing is fine, keep it up, every little helps. Can't remember the Welsh version off hand, but there's a proverb that says it's easy to throw a mountain into the sea, just so long as you do it stone by stone. Pob hwyl!

Yes there are still people in Wales for whom Welsh is their first language. There are TV and Radio channels in Welsh and the yearly National Eisteddfod (a huge cultural festival), is conducted entirely in Welsh.

The point about kids learning their native language is that they do it every waking hour for maybe 7 - 10 years, they have to in order to communicate, they really have no choice. Few adults have that amount of time or commitment for a second language, and anyway it would be incredibly inefficient. Grammar and so on are simply ways to take short-cuts, rather than having to deduce everything for yourself. Who anyway would want to spend enough hours with you every day as they would with a child?
