In Sierra Leone in Temne the word for white man is Opotor and it derives from Portuguese apparently since they discovered Sierra Leone

not only do these lessons reinforce previous video lessons, but they help develop the discipline of thinking in terms of constructing complete sentences. two questions. first, at 10:45, you mentioned the phrase "na krataa yi nso ɛ". given that Santo was not referring to any piece of paper, but to a specific piece of paper, why didn't he say: "na krataa *no* nso ɛ"? second, what is the difference between saying: "nti" versus saying "ɛno nti" in expressions? is the latter attempting to express some specific emphasis that the former is not?

Medaase onua 😊. Both "no (the)" and "yi (this)" reference specific items: "krataa no (the paper)"; "krataa yi (this paper - not just any paper)". We mostly use "yi (this)" if the item is in sight. "nti" is used as "so" when it begins a clause, e.g. "(e)nti merekɔ (so I'm going)". If it doesn't begin a clause, it's typically used as "because of", to state a reason for something, e.g. "wo korɔno nti (because of your thievery)", "ɛno nti (because of that)"

@@learnakan ɛno nti, mate yi seesei. meda wo ase. [i don't know if the syntax is correct, but i was trying to make a phrase using words from this lesson] your explanation of "ɛno nti" is consistent with my understanding from how i have heard the phrase used. it seemed to me that "ɛno nti" tended to be used in *concluding* statements: "ɛno nti" was a more *specific* kind of "nti". so, as i came to understand it, "nti" works more like the english word "so", while "ɛno nti" works more like the english word "therefore".
