If you partner opens, and your right hand opponent overcalls in the suit you would have liked to have bid, think strongly about passing. You can't double because double would mean takeout. Passing is often your best action. If you pass your partner should re-open with a double if they have a shortage in that overcalled suit.
When they reopen with a double you can pass and catch the opponents out. Happy days! When you are in the overcalling seat remember that good opponents might do this to you. Don't overcall at the 2 level especially unless you have something really quite decent.

I have doubled 2 clubs and gone down even though I had 5 clubs - obviously not enough!

Wouldn't this more properly be called a reopening double? Also, the 2D return is lead directing, asking for the lower suit. It doesn't matter, but might as well make partner happy.

After two passes, I’d think so, but partner always has the option to exercise their judgment to convert the X to penalty.

Since south can double 2C if they have four card majors, the gain of overcalling with a five card club suit is not that great. And yes, of course lead the 8D.
