Was living with some pretty messed-up family members, stood up for myself and now I'm homeless 500 miles away living out of my car. When I do have a place to call my own again, I'm getting this poem framed on the wall. Funny, how a poem about bleakness and Exile can still create a spark of inspiration-thank you for sharing.

I started learning Tang poems at the beginning of my journey into mandarin, 鹿柴 was my very first. When I found this one I was puzzled about why it was written. Thank you for revealing the mystery, Jared. I find Tang poetry quite similar to Chinese exquisite paintings - they paint a powerful picture with the minimum of strokes. Of course, using hieroglyphs also helps 🙂

It's certainly amazing how four simple lines creating a seemingly simple image can have so much depth

This poem made me think about another Tang poem, which I have not read, but know, vaguely, from reading the "Pillowbook of Sei Shonagon." It is about a once top ranked courtesan who has been reduced to sitting in a boat in a lake in the pleasure quarter and playing a lute. Her old admirer, the poet recognizes her and calls out her name; but she is so ashamed for him to see how far in status that she has fallen, she hides her face behind her lute. It sounds very moving. Thank you.

Wanderer’s nightsong II Johann Wolfgang von Goethe English translation: Over every mountain-top Lies peace, In every tree-top You scarcely feel A breath of wind; The little birds are hushed in the wood. Wait, soon you too Will be at peace.

Very keen and deep analysis! I've never thought of this poem this way. I thought it was just a description of certain solitude, like a Chinese mountain and river painting.

But that's also the beauty of Chinese poetry, however you understand it it's not wrong

suggestion: if you put a paiting about all these poem there that would be a far more better way

I think if you just sink yourself into the atmosphere and imagine, it will be way more impressive and emotional than seeing the scene from a image. Welp I guess since I know Chinese and it's quite a difference. Since you will be bombarded with the impression and image from the very compact but meaningful language.
